Deploying Windows 8 Virtual Desktop Infrastructure on Windows Server 2012

Several months ago, fellow blogger Kees Baggerman covered?RDS: Windows 8 Scenario-based RDS deployment?which included a 10 minute YouTube video on RDS Session Virtualization (aka terminal services).? In this article, I am going to cover the other element of RDS scenario-based installation, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure. Microsoft VDI technologies have been around for several iterations of Hyper-V and Server 2008. With 2008 R2 SP1 Microsoft introduced RemoteFX, a promising technology for virtual desktop GPU acceleration.? However, in the past there have been several challenges with deploying Microsoft VDI, namely the initial desktop provisioning and stateless pooling.? With Server 2012, these two components have several promising enhancements.

First, Server 2012 now has a built-in provisioning mechanism whereby a powered down and SysPrep?d Hyper-V virtual machine can be used as a master desktop to provision collections of virtual desktops. This means that System Center Virtual Machine Manager is no longer a requirement or nicety for the initial provisioning of the systems. Additionally, this built-in provisioning mechanism uses VHD differencing disks, similar to the VMware linked clone and Citrix MCS disk chaining technologies.? Second, Server 2012 now has a stateless pooling and reverting mechanism whereby changes to the virtual desktops are reverted upon logoff. This means pooled VDI desktops are no longer tainted by previously logged in users. To demonstrate these capabilities, let?s start by deploying a simple VDI infrastructure including three servers: a Connection Broker (CB01), a Web Access server (WA01), and a Virtualization Host (HV01). Each of these three systems consists of typical installations of Server 2012, joined to a single domain.

Better NJ Nursing Homes for Greater Golden Years

For those with aged loved ones within their family, taking these much loved relatives to a health care center might be one of many toughest selections they deal with. The problem in your labor and exclusive life and the increasing care specifications of your senior cousin might force you to agree them to a care center. Recent modifications among nursing homes in NJ may make the decision easier, though.

Change In Employees

One of the greatest improvements is among personnel. Maybe you are familiar with the stereotype of the nursing home staff, because of their cold, unsmiling faces and colder approach.

The staff in the nursing homes in NJ today differs from that stereotype. It is certain the people who looks after your senior relative will do so with friendliness and the greatest care about their needs. They are now practical and mindful of the needs of people under their care and their relatives.

The modern stereotype these staffers intend to make is that of a kind, caring and professional health professional who attends to the wants of their charges, directly cooperates and coordinates with relatives and the elder's health care professional, and makes certain the senior enjoys the twilight of their lives.

Home Aside From Home

In the past, elderly care amenities appeared and felt like a ward. Nowadays, several nursing homes in NJ experience a lot more like a home. Aside from the numerous functions that assist care for citizens, a number of these amenities have amenities that retain their inhabitants busy and lively.

A few innovations consist of providing seniors individual plots of land to cultivate or equipment to assist with a hobby to engage in. A few engage their neighboring areas in functions for the inhabitants, such as regular trips and participation in neighborhood occasions.

Many NJ nursing homes also promote exclusive pastime rooms. They are open to inhabitants who desire for peaceful contemplation or sleep. These are growing to be a typical attribute in these amenities, along with the more traditional communal dining and social halls.

Great Principles Of Medical Care

Today's nursing homes in NJ are performing their best to keep up the best requirements of health care excellence, as they know some individuals may have specific health issues. The new standard is to provide inhabitants with the latest in health care in the nursing home, including state-of-the-art rehabilitate amenities for the grandparents who need it.

In hiring employees, they select individuals with the correct credentials, especially in elderly care. Resident doctors are now obtainable, along with consultants. Non-medical employees also obtains considerable training in managing seniors. Faith based and religious services are usually available today.

Perhaps the biggest change among nursing homes in NJ could be the special coordination between family doctors and facility's employees. This makes certain tailored care based on the wants of the person, including the application of specific diet programs. This new example also means the delivery of appropriate quantities of health care to inhabitants happens in a timely way.

Tegan Macdonald writes about nursing homes in NJ and advises NJ nursing homes to friends and family.

Trae Tha Truth In 'Pain' After Death Of Dinky D

Houston MC is 'grateful to be livin' ' after a shooting that left his friend dead at the scene.
By Rob Markman

Trae tha Truth is on the mend after being shot early Wednesday morning, but the Houston rapper is more hurt by the death of his friend Dinky D.

On Wednesday, Trae tweeted "I Appreciate All Tha Prayers, Calls, & Luv.. I'm Ok ... I'm On The Road To Recovery... I Love Y'all..... #Amen," but on Thursday (June 21), he began to express his grief.

"Sitting Here Thinking & Being Greatful To Be Livin... But Can't explain Tha Pain Felt For Those Who Died #GodBlessTheDead ...," he wrote. "I done been through hell and back these last 3 years..& Thinking of Dinky Fighting for his last breath knowin nothing can be done... Damn."

Houston's self-proclaimed "King of the Streets" was rushed to the hospital and treated for his gunshot wound on Wednesday morning following a shootout at an after-hours club in Southwest Houston. While Trae has since been treated and released, three victims, including ABN crew member Dinky D and affiliate Poppa C, died at the scene.

"The injury that Trae Tha Truth sustained last evening in the form of a gun shot wound at Scores Night Club in Houston, TX, does not nearly compare to the wound he feels in his heart for the lives that were lost," read a press release that was sent to MTV News on behalf of the MC.

The shooting has not only affected family and friends but the Texas rap community as well. "RIP Dinky D and Poppa c," Bun B tweeted on Wednesday. Slim Thug followed with his own message. "Im just waking up hearing all this, we was all together yesterday prayers out to the whole #ABN I can't believe Dinky died #RIP Dinky."

Trae's press release urged that the rapper was not the intended target. "This shooting is nothing more than an extremely unfortunate incident in which Trae also fell victim to a random act of violence; the same act that Trae tirelessly attempts to prevent and protect Houston citizens through his 501(c)3 non profit organization, Angel By Nature," the statement read.

In an interview with XXLMag.com, Trae painted a picture for the horrific incident. "I'm not sure exactly what the altercation was necessarily about, but long story short, whatever transpired, they ran in my direction, so in the process of running in my direction, that kind of had everybody in the open," he said. "So as the altercation came my way, shots were being dispersed, but since it was coming our direction, it was a crowd of people. Everybody was wrong place, wrong time."

The death of Trae's close friend Clip D last November weighed heavily on the rapper. "I kinda went back in a shell. I got back in that zone where it was F the world, I didn't want to be bothered, I didn't want to look at nobody," Trae told Mixtape Daily during a February interview in Orlando, Florida.

No arrests have been made in connection to the shooting.

Temple Well Represented at 2012 NCAA Career in Sports Forum

Five Temple University student-athletes - Missy Schweitzer (lacrosse), Kacper Rams (men's tennis), Emily Frazer (volleyball), Jennifer Abercumbie (women'strack) and Jabair Khan (baseball) - were among 300 student-athletes from around the nation to take part in the NCAA's 2012 Career in Sports Forum.? The Forum took place from June 7-10 and allowed NCAA student-athletes to explore various career paths inside collegiate athletics, from roles in administration to coaching. Below are perspectives from Jennifer Abercrumbie and Kacper Rams.

Jennifer Abercrumbie

Attending the 2012 NCAA Career in Sports Forum was a one of a kind opportunity that will continue to influence my life for many years to come. The forum itself may be an opportunity for about 300 student-athletes from all across the country to learn more about being an athletics coach or administrator, but by the end of the weekend, everyone can assert that that is not the only thing that was learned. Before being able to show exactly how it impacted my life, I would have to tell you why I wanted to attend the forum.

Just a few short years ago, there was a girl from the south side of Chicago who decided to attend a big university in Philadelphia; a university where she would know no one else prior to attending, but that did not get in her way. This girl was also determined to be a member of said university's Cross Country/Track and Field programs. That girl was me.? Realistically, the tendencies for me to care about the well-being of my peers, to work to improve the experience of others, and to connect with many people were first brought forth through competing as an athlete in elementary and high school. Upon arriving at Temple University, these tendencies had a chance to grow even further through a nomination to the University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). In the past two years, my experience as a SAAC representative has given me the opportunity to represent not only my team, but other student-athletes to our administration, government officials in Harrisburg, conference officials as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference SAAC, and NCAA staff. It was through the interactions with people who serve as members of the aforementioned institutions that I knew I wanted to work to improve the student-athlete experience, as both scholars and athletes.

Upon arriving to the hotel, I had no idea what to expect, but attending the forum with others from my school helped to ease some apprehension. Once checked in and registered, we had the time to grab some lunch and mix and mingle with other participants who had already arrived. Later that afternoon, following the opening session that outlined further details about the forum, the large group of about 300 student-athletes had the chance to separate into their color teams. The forum was divided into eight color teams, facilitated by professionals from differing universities, conferences, and even the NCAA. The smaller teams helped to create an intimate setting that was better for sharing and more in-depth learning and exploration. Each team not only had people who were interested in different career paths (a combination of people who wanted to be coaches and administrators), but there was also a level of diversity in the sports represented in the rooms.

The first day was jam-packed with information, capped off by a dinner and large group session with DeNita Turner, President and CEO of Image Builders, Inc. Turner shared one of the most motivating of speeches, in terms of discussing what it truly means to make a first impression or to put your best foot forward. Learning from her about personal and professional conduct, the transition from being a student-athlete to the business of athletics, as well as some proper networking/interviewing skills were among the wisdom she shared that was beneficial for not only the rest of the forum but life after the forum, as well. However, the thing I will remember most about Turner is her confidence in her own brand and ideas, which was exemplified when she told the crowd her story highlighted by the phrase, ?You don't know me, but you need me.? Turner said these words to the right person early on in her career and they helped get her to where she is today. Most importantly, Turner helped to show that other than the athletes, there is an expansive network of people behind the scenes to help make the sports industry the enterprise that it is.

Day two was about exploring careers in the sports industry. With two main panel sessions, one on the ?big picture? of intercollegiate athletics and the other on alternative careers in sports, participants were able to explore careers besides coaches or the typical administrators involved with athletics departments on university campuses. Day three provided more insight into our specific interest. Participants were split into smaller groups of their interests: coaching track individuals were broken up by their sport and administrative track individuals were spread across four different groups of administrative professionals.?

The administrative track breakdown provided the opportunity to learn about actual campus and conference positions. My group, headed by a D3 Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director, a D2 Associate Vice President for Athletics, a D1 Assistant Director for Marketing and Media Relations, and a D1 Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Well-Being and Development provided an expansive view of what it was like to work behind the scenes in student-athlete development and promotions across all levels. Not only did I get a chance to learn about the positions available at different campuses and in different conferences, I had a chance to learn about the differences between the ways the divisions of the NCAA work, and discover what are the advantages and disadvantages of working at each level.?

During the session, we had the chance to ask as many questions as we wanted to the professionals standing before us. One of the things that stood out the most to me was what Associate VP for Athletics of Dowling College, Melody Cope, and Associate AD for Student-Athlete Well-Being and Development at Indiana University, Mattie White, had to say about their own education. White, who has pursued higher education to a tee and hopes to finish her PhD program in the coming semesters shared the tale of getting funding for higher education while Cope shared that the pursuit of higher education is one thing she wished she had taken advantage of, especially since it has been offered to her at every institution for which she has worked.? Knowing that graduate school is a step I plan to take, hearing what they had to say was very important to me. After not only talking with my administrative facilitators, I had the chance to talk to my Pink team facilitators for quite some time about graduate school. Alison and Eddie were not only willing to talk to me about what to look for in programs of interests, but they were willing to share the stories of their individual path and some secrets of the trade, too.

With Sunday came the closing to the forum, but certainly not the closing to our journey as future athletics professionals. Being in attendance provided me with the opportunity to network and build connections with athletes, administrators, and current sports industry professionals. I was able to make connections with university, conference, and NCAA national office staff members that have changed my life and have helped me to realize ways that I will be able to impact the lives of my fellow student-athletes at both an institutional and conference level as a leader and member of SAAC. I was able to learn so much about the industry that I am a member of and hope to work for someday, but I was also able to learn about myself and how to interact better with people who may be different from me in order to create a well performing and cohesive workspace (quick plug for the DISC assessments!).

As I have stated to the participants and facilitators with whom I have kept in touch, I will forever be indebted to the NCAA for all of the opportunities that the institution has afforded for me as a student-athlete, and now as a soon-to-be intercollegiate athletics professional. If I had the chance, I would do the experience all over again in a heartbeat. I am now able to make informed decisions about where I want to go for graduate school, what type of position I would like to pursue, and most importantly, I now have a whole slew of athletics professionals to service as mentors, confidants, and connections to help me realize my dreams.

Kacper Rams

Before coming to Indianapolis, I had no expectations regarding what I was going to learn. Also, I didn't know exactly how the NCAA Career in Sports Forum could help me in developing my career after graduating from college. On the other hand, I was aware about the opportunity to meet a lot of outstanding student-athletes from all around the country and from variety of different sports. I knew that I would be able to listen to great speakers from the sports industry.? These speakers, who are some of the best in this field, would be able to help me learn more about possible career paths for me in the future. As the days in Indianapolis were passing by, I realized that the NCAA Career in Sports Forum is not about what was prepared for us, but more about what we are able to take away from it. This whole experience proved to me that our mentors, coaches and friends can only offer us opportunities, but they can't do things for us.? Our life is in our hands. Therefore, it is important to be ready for and open to the opportunities, and to do your best once you get this chance.

All the participants were divided into smaller discussion groups, which were meant to enable deeper exploration into the topics presented by the speakers. Our team facilitators encouraged us to speak up, ask questions and express any concerns regarding the things speakers were talking about. The atmosphere was very warm and friendly, creating a great environment for discussion and useful answers. The smaller groups also created an opportunity for us to talk about our strengths and weaknesses, or as the NCAA staff calls them, ?opportunities to advance?.? I found it very helpful because having someone else evaluate me as a person, employee, or athlete, creates a totally different insight from the way I perceive myself. The small group workshops also helped me to realize what I need to work on in order to better communicate with others and to improve my skills in various academic and business areas.

The most important take-away for me from this forum were the expressions, ?be great?, ?be humble?, and ?fail, never quit?. Speakers day by day were emphasizing the need for us to try our best. Though all of the speakers were great, the most influential person for me was Bruce Clint, former Navy Seal and football player at the Naval Academy, who currently is running his own training company. He continuously stressed the importance of purpose in everyone's life.? He reinforced his idea by proving that it is better to ask ?why? not ?what.? He said that purpose is the key to being happy and successful in the business world because if you know why you are doing certain things, you will give your very best, every single time. Bruce's speech was very inspirational, and I am sure that he greatly influenced a lot of people in the audience.

Beside terrific speakers and useful workshops, networking with other student-athletes was a significant part of this forum. Interacting with them was very educational because you could trade stories with a lot of interesting people whose life experience was much different than yours. It was interesting to listen to what other students-athletes do during their seasons, what their competitions are like, and how college life differs in other parts of the United States.

The NCAA Career in Sports Forum was a great overall experience, and I would encourage anyone who is interested to attend. It is a great place to overcome difficulties in terms of communicating with other people. Communication is a skill that needs to be worked on in order to perfect it, but the hard work really pays off. It is also the best place to meet with outstanding new people who you would not have had the chance to interact with otherwise, and it creates relationships that can be beneficial in the future. Therefore, this forum can really help in developing one's career path after graduation and in finding out more about ourselves in order to be more successful in both our personal and business lives.

PFT: Tomlinson feels 'like I'm graduating'

Peter Ginsberg, Billy Martin, Joel SegalAP

The Commissioner of the National Football League rarely gets talked to in the way he got talked to today.

On Monday Goodell got an earful from lawyer Peter Ginsberg in the initial session of the bounty hearings.

As set forth below, Ginsberg accused Goodell of failing to conduct a fair process and distorting facts, calling the proceedings ?shocking and shameful.?? Multiple sources tell PFT that Ginsberg?s remarks were ?heated,? and one source present at the session perceived that Goodell?s face turned red during Ginsberg?s rant.

Ginsberg also claimed that former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and former Saints assistant Michael Cerullo have since retracted any claim that the players actually were engaged in a bounty program.? That?s an allegation that hasn?t previously been made and, if true, would be extremely significant.

Ginsberg concluded by demanding that Goodell rescind the punishment of Ginsberg?s client, Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, and apologize publicly.

Though it wasn?t quite an Animal House-style march out, Vilma and Ginsberg left the hearings after the initial session, and they did not return when the hearing resumed in the afternoon.

PFT has obtained a copy of the uncertified rough draft transcript from the morning session.? Ginsberg?s remarks are summarized below or, for those of you reading this in the Rumor Mill, after the jump.

?We have been willing to meet with you for months now,? Ginsberg said to Goodell after addressing alleged jurisdictional issues with the appeal process.? ?If you, sir, were prepared to exchange fairly and thoroughly in a process in which we could have a discourse and you, Commissioner, could come to a better understanding of what, in fact, occurred with the New Orleans Saints.? If you had presented us with a modicum of due process, if you had elicited or evidenced any willingness to share the evidence with us, we were more than prepared to [engage] in a full [dialogue].

?Instead, Commissioner, you have deprived us of the most fundamental rights, you have provided us with no evidence either in a timely fashion or other to support any of the horrific accusation and allegations that you have made about Mr. Vilma.? You have been unwilling to [engage] in any fair [dialogue] or any fair exchange.? You have made serious allegations an in light of those allegations, in light of what you claim to be important to the NFL and in light of you, sir, your supposed concern for the integrity of this sport and in light of the consequences, Jonathan Vilma both personally and professional, we have as you know found these process[es] and these proceedings to be shocking and shameful.

?From the very beginning, Mr. Vilma asked you to do two things, Commissioner Goodell.? One was to investigate as thoroughly [you] could what lay behind your supposed accusation and the other thing Mr. Vilma asked you to do as to listen to him because he was prepared to tell the whole truth about your supposed ? about your accusations.

?We have, in fact, engaged in a thorough investigation.? It has been [stymied] in part, sir, because you haven?t issued gag orders to people with evidence, former coaches, people with [the] New Orleans Saints, you had made threats to keep them from talking, you have refused to have them even participate in today?s proceedings, but nonetheless, Commissioner Goodell, we have talked to dozens of people, literally dozens of people regarding your allegations.? We have spend months gathering information and we have compared that information to your descriptions, your public descriptions. . . .? But in preparing with what you have accused Mr. Vilma with the information that we have gathered, we have found the following, Commissioner Goodell.?

Ginsberg at that point accused Goodell of distorting the facts, pointing to the email message Mike Ornstein sent from prison in September 2011, which supposedly offered a $5,000 bounty on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the Week One game between the Saints and Green Bay.? Ginsberg also mentioned Hargrove?s declaration as being ?distorted . . . in the media? by the league.

?You have taken words that Gregg Williams used, colorful words like cart-offs and wax and [kill the head] and have chosen publicly to distort the meaning of those words notwithstanding the fact that Mr. Williams and others ha told you that those terms in no way relate to illegal hits or any bounty program that you have decided, sir, to misrepresent what those words, in fact, mean,? Ginsberg said.

Ginsberg also cites ?substantial evidence? that Williams and former Saints assistant (and suspected whistleblower) Mike Cerullo ?retracted directly and affirmatively and without equivocation any claims they have previously made about a bounty program,? explaining that the league has not disclosed those retractions.

?Your office leaked to the press a couple weeks ago a supposed ledger which theoretically provided evidence of a bounty program,? Ginsberg said.? ?And when the media analyzed this supposed ledger, it became clear [apparently] even to the NFL office that since no players were identified in that supposed ledger, there was no tying of that ledger to any way to a bounty program.? You have chosen after airing it out publicly not even to include that ledger in the documents you provided in an untimely fashion with regard to this proceeding.?

Ginsberg then pushed toward a conclusion of his remarks, apparently hoping to end strong.

?Sir, we have looked at the objective evidence as well as looked at the Gregg Williams video and spoken to people and we have looked at the statistics, we have looked at game film, we have looked at penalties, we have concluded and I think it is irrefutable that there is nothing objective that can support what you have accused Mr. Vilma of having done publicly,? Ginsberg said.? ?Commissioner Goodell, Jonathan Vilma has never participated in a bounty program.? He has never put up any money designed to hurt an opposing player. He has never received any money for hurting another player. He has never intended to hurt another player and he has never in any way provided any incentive for any of his teammates to have hurt another playing.

?Commissioner Goodell, what you have done is to make some horrible accusations about Mr. Vilma?s person, about his integrity and about his professionalism. You have imposed a misplaced punishment and, sir, you have cast a shadow not only on Mr. Vilma personally and professionally, and I dare say under NFL and under the offices of the Commissioner in engaging in these proceedings, there?s just one and just one result in this proceeding and that is for you to rescind any punishment against Mr. Vilma and to apologize in public for what you have done.?

Though it?s unlikely Goodell will comply, it feels inevitable that Vilma and Goodell eventually will be hashing this out before someone who wears a black robe on a regular basis ? and there won?t be much gray between their respective positions.

Intel christens its 'Many Integrated Core' products Xeon Phi, eyes exascale milestone

Been wondering when the next big leap in high performance computing would hit? Well, Intel would like you to believe the time is now and the name of that revolution is the Xeon Phi. Formerly codenamed Knights Corner, the Many Integrated Core product is pushing the field of supercomputers into the era of the exaflop by squeezing a teraflop of performance into a package small enough to plug into a PCIe slot. The Phi brand will, at first at least, be applied to specialized coprocessors designed for highly parallel tasks. The chips are built using Intel's 22nm manufacturing process and 3-D TriGate transistors, piling in more that 50 cores in an effort to combat the inroads made by GPU companies like NVIDIA in the supercomputing space. For more info check out the presentation (PDF) and blog post at the source links.

U.S. Open 2012: Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, David Toms Lead After Round 2 At Olympic Club (PHOTOS)

SAN FRANCISCO -- There were no fist pumps for Tiger Woods, just a deep breath and a slow exhale. Jim Furyk walked most of the 7,170 yards at Olympic Club with his head down. David Toms couldn't think of a single shot he hit without his full attention Friday.

They were not the survivors of the U.S. Open. They were the leaders.

And it's no coincidence that all of them have been tested in the majors, none more often than Woods, who survived a patch of bogeys early in his round for an even-par 70 that took him another round closer to a 15th major title.

"I know that it takes a bit out of us, but so be it," Woods said. "Much rather be there than missing cuts or just making the cut. So it's a wonderful place to be with a chance to win your nation's open."

Just when this U.S. Open was starting to look like child's play, a trio of major champions took it back.

Furyk rolled in a 40-foot birdie putt from off the third green in the morning for a 69. Woods and Toms, who showed a steady hand with the putter for a 70, joined him in the afternoon when the conditions were fiery and emotions were frayed.

They were the only players to beat par for 36 holes at 1-under 139.

And they restored some sanity to a major that for a brief and stunning moment had been taken over by a 17-year-old who only two weeks ago didn't even win his state high school championship. Beau Hossler went 11 holes without making a bogey, and took the outright lead on one of the toughest holes at Olympic. He got lost in the thick rough and trees on the brutal front nine, dropping five shots in eight holes for a 73 that left him four shots behind.

That wasn't the only surprise.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy missed the cut for the fourth time in his last five tournaments. He set a U.S. Open record last year at Congressional with a 131 through 36 holes. He was 19 shots worse at Olympic, with a 73 giving him a two-day score of 150.

"It wasn't the way I wanted to play," he said.

Also leaving San Francisco far earlier than anyone expected were Luke Donald, the world's No. 1 player, Masters champion Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson, coming off a win last week at the St. Jude Classic.

It doesn't take much at this U.S. Open to swallow up even the best players.

When the last group trudged up the hill toward the stately clubhouse at Olympic, the experience at the top of the leaderboard was impossible to ignore.

"Whoever wins this golf tournament is going to be a great champion, somebody that's probably won events before, that can handle the emotions and can handle the adversity in a U.S. Open, and somebody with experience," Toms said. "At least that's what I think. You never know. Strange things can happen, but I would think that you would see a lot of that on the leaderboard come late Sunday."

It starts with Woods, who is coming off his second win of the year at the Memorial and looks as strong as ever. Hitting shots both directions, mainly with irons off the tees, he overcame three straight bogeys on his front nine, two of those shots not far off from being easy birdie chances.

His only regret was not taking advantage of having a wedge in his hand on the last three holes, all birdie opportunities that became pars.

When he regained a share of the lead with Furyk on the 13th with a 4-foot birdie putt, Woods was coming up on a series of holes that allowed players to at least think of making birdie. In a greenside bunker in two on the par-5 16th ? shortened to 609 yards Friday ? Woods blasted out weakly and missed a 12-foot putt. With a mid-iron in his hand in the fairway on the par-5 17th, he went over the green and down a deep slope. Despite a superb pitch to 8 feet, he missed the putt.

And with a wedge from the fairway on the 18th, he came up well short and into a bunker, having to settle for par.

Pars aren't bad, though.

"This tournament, you're just plodding along," Woods said. "This is a different tournament. You have to stay patient, stay present, and you're just playing for a lot of pars. This is not a tournament where we have to make a bunch of birdies."

Graeme McDowell, the U.S. Open champion two years ago down the coast at Pebble Beach, dropped three shots on his last four holes for a 72. Even so, he was very much in the hunt two shots behind at 141, along with recent LSU alum John Peterson (70), Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium (69) and Michael Thompson, the first-round leader who followed his opening 66 with a 75.

"It's just tough to have fun out there," McDowell said.

Woods had won eight straight times when he had at least a share of the lead going into the weekend at the majors, a streak that ended at the 2009 PGA Championship when Y.E. Yang chased him down from four shots back. Woods hasn't seriously contended in the final hour of a major since then.

And a stern test waits on the weekend. Asked for a winning score, McDowell deferred to the USGA.

"They can have whatever they want," McDowell said. "If they want 5 over to win, 10 over to win it ... they can hide these pins away. I would have to imagine around level par."

Woods, who played the difficult six-hole opening stretch at 1 under in the opening round, wasn't so fortunate the second time around.

He brilliantly bounced his tee shot onto the green at the par-3 third to 5 feet for birdie, and the outright lead at 2 under, and he appeared to have everything under control. That didn't last, though.

He pushed his approach into a bunker on the fifth and took bogey. He got a miserable break on the next hole when his second shot was suspended in the thick collar of the bunker, forcing him to grip his wedge on the steel shaft to play his shot, which went through the green for another bogey. And on the short par-4 seventh, which can be reached from the tee, he three-putted from 8 feet for a third straight bogey.

On the other side of the course, the cheers of disbelief were for Hossler.

The kid rolled in a 6-foot birdie putt on the 520-yard first hole, putting him alone in the lead at 2 under.

"Unfortunately," he said, "I kind of lost it coming in."

It's wasn't the pressure. It wasn't the size of his audience perched along the hills. It wasn't the sight of his name listed over three major champions.

It was The Olympic Club.

Hossler dropped a shot on the next hole, though the real trouble came when he pulled his tee shot on the fourth into the hay and made double bogey. Then, he hit into a bunker on the adjacent hole for another bogey, lost another shot on the sixth and only slowed the damage with a chip-in behind the seventh green for birdie.

He still gets to sleep in on Saturday with his late tee time, and what 17-year-old doesn't like that?
