SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Mario Chalmers had career highs with 10 3-pointers and 34 points to lead the Miami Heat to a 128-99 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night.

LeBron James had 20 points, seven assists, five steals and a pair of blocks for the Heat, who had a season-high point total. Miami, which hadn?t topped 100 points in its previous four games, got a needed bounceback win after losing two straight and five of eight since Dec. 26.

Chris Bosh had 16 points, Mike Miller 12 and Dwyane Wade 11 for Miami, which shot 56 percent from the field and went 17 for 37 from beyond the arc. Chalmers tied Brian Shaw?s franchise record for 3s and connected on 10-of-13 overall in breaking the previous record of nine 3s at Sleep Train Arena.

Isaiah Thomas made six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 34 points for the Kings, who dropped their fourth straight game.

MAGIC 104, CLIPPERS 101

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? J.J. Redick gave Orlando its first lead on a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left, Arron Afflalo tied his season high with 30 points, and the Magic snapped a 10-game skid.

The loss ended the Clippers? franchise-record 13-game, home-winning streak and provided them with a scare when All-Star guard Chris Paul went down holding his right knee with 54 seconds to go. Paul returned after a timeout and hit a 15-footer to draw his team within one with 33 seconds left.

But the Clippers turned the ball over on Jamal Crawford?s offensive foul. Josh McRoberts found Nikola Vucevic open under the basket, and Vucevic dunked to extend Orlando?s lead to 104-101 with 8 seconds left.

After a timeout, Crawford missed a 3-pointer as time expired.

Redick had 21 points for the injury-riddled Magic, who ended the franchise?s longest skid since 2003-04.

Blake Griffin tied his season high with 30 points for the Clippers.

WIZARDS 93, HAWKS 83

WASHINGTON (AP) ? John Wall gave his teammates a lift with 14 points and four assists in his first game of the season, and the worst-in-NBA Wizards have their first winning streak.

Wall?s playing time will be limited as he returns from a knee injury, but he appeared to have his old speed and explosiveness back while playing seven minutes in the first half and 15 in the second half.

No. 3 overall pick Bradley Beal, getting to play with Wall for the first time, scored 16 points for the Wizards, who are 6-28 but have strung together two wins in a row following their upset of Oklahoma City on Monday.

Jeff Teague scored 19 points, Al Horford had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Josh Smith added 11 points for the Hawks, who have lost five of six.

MAVERICKS 104, GRIZZLIES 83

DALLAS (AP) ? Shawn Marion scored a season-high 20 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 17 and the Mavericks won consecutive games for the first time in a month.

All five starters scored in double figures for Dallas, with Chris Kaman scoring eight straight points in the third quarter and finishing with 14. O.J. Mayo had 11 and Darren Collison 10.

The Grizzlies were ragged a night after a big overtime win against Southwest Division-leading San Antonio. Memphis shot 38 percent and Rudy Gay was the only starter in double figures. He led the Grizzlies with 12 points.

76ERS 107, ROCKETS 100

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Jrue Holiday scored 30 points, Thaddeus Young had 18 points and 12 rebounds and the 76ers snapped a five-game losing streak.

Jason Richardson scored 16 points for the Sixers, who finally return home for a lengthy stint as they try to play their way back into the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Sixers opened a stretch of 12 home games in the next 13 and hope they can start to offset a miserable 2-6 road trip that stretched over the new year.

James Harden led the Rockets with 29 points and Chandler Parsons had 23. Jeremy Lin missed 11 of 13 shots for seven points.

Led by 24 points from Holiday, the Sixers built a 14-point lead in the third quarter, and found an offensive touch they?ve missed for most of the season.

SUNS 97, BULLS 81

CHICAGO (AP) ? Luis Scola scored 22 points to help the Suns snap a five-game losing streak.

Michael Beasley added 20 points for Phoenix, which had lost 12 straight on the road and got its first win away from home since beating Cleveland on Nov. 27.

The Suns got the 2,000th win in franchise history, accomplishing the feat in their 3,599th game to become the fourth-fastest team to the reach the milestone.

Carlos Boozer had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Joakim Noah added 10 points and 13 boards for Chicago, which continued its inconsistent play at home with its fourth loss in the last six. The Bulls lost for just the second time in 13 games when both Boozer and Noah recorded double-doubles.

Chicago was whistled for four technical fouls, capped by coach Tom Thibodeau?s penalty with 3:57 left in the fourth.

JAZZ 90, PISTONS 87

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) ? Al Jefferson scored 10 of his 20 points in the third quarter, and Utah rallied for the win.

Detroit?s Brandon Knight missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds that would have tied the game after the Pistons trailed by 13 points with 3:26 left.

Jefferson helped the Jazz outscore Detroit 25-11 in the third, powering them to their first lead after trailing by as many as 15 points.

Utah also put together a 17-3 run after Austin Daye?s 3-pointer with 8:38 left gave the Pistons the lead for the last time.

Knight had 16 points and Greg Monroe scored 12 for the Pistons, who got a late lift from reserve Will Bynum, who scored 13 points.

Utah?s Paul Millsap and Randy Foye each scored 17.

PACERS 96, BOBCATS 88

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? George Hill scored 19 points, D.J. Augustin added a season-high 18 and Indiana earned its fourth straight win.

Lance Stephenson had 17 points and David West scored 14 to help the Central Division-leading Pacers, playing without leading scorer Paul George (illness), get their sixth win in seven games.

Ben Gordon scored 21 points for the Bobcats, and Kemba Walker had 16 on 5-for-9 shooting.

Cocoa Beach, New Smyrna Beach rank among top 10 beaches in Florida

Courtesy Visit North Carolina

Cocoa Beach in Brevard County and New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County both ranked among the top 10 beaches on USA Today?s list.

The unusally warm winter in Florida could send the snowbirds flocking south to the Sunshine State a little earlier this year.

That?s why USA Today put together a list of the top 10 beaches/beach towns in Florida, with the help of Florida International University professor Stephen P. Leatherman.

Luckily for Central Florida's hospitality and tourism industry, two nearby beaches made the cut.

Cocoa Beach in Brevard County and New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County both ranked among the top 10 beaches on USA Today?s list. The list says both beaches are known for surfing, and New Smyrna Beach still allows visitors to drive on the beach.

Oakland gives manager Bob Melvin 2-year extension

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? Bob Melvin has repeatedly described the comfort of managing right at home in the Bay Area ? and Billy Beane has described the comfort in having a winning, "modern-day" manager leading the Oakland Athletics.

Melvin is staying put in the very place he wants to be well into the future.

The A's manager received a two-year contract extension Monday that takes him through the 2016 season. Later Monday, Oakland announced it had reached agreement on a $1 million, one-year contract with catcher George Kottaras, a raise of $275,000.

Beane is thrilled to have a manager in place to guide the small-budget A's for years to come.

"To get an extension like this from people you respect and admire and supported you, it really makes you feel good and makes you feel better about doing your job," said Melvin, voted AL Manager of the Year after leading Oakland to a surprising West division title. "My expectations are the same as last year. We're going to compete hard and expect to win. Based on having the results we had last year, we'll have that much more confidence coming into spring training."

Oakland became the first team in major league history to win a division or pennant after trailing by five games with less than 10 to play, sweeping three games against Texas to win the division over the Rangers.

"It's really a reflection of our commitment to Bob and Bob's commitment to us. If you know you have the right guy, there's no sense in waiting until he's got one year left," general manager Billy Beane said. "This was probably the simplest negotiation I've ever had in my career here. That's a reflection of the relationship that Bob has with the organization. We're happy to give him this well-deserved extension. It didn't take very long. The actual writing it up took longer than the actual negotiations."

Oakland lost to Detroit 3-2 in a best-of-five AL division series. The A's ended a five-year stretch without a winning record or playoff berth, finishing 94-68.

The A's did it with a payroll of $59.5 million ? lowest in the majors ? and 12 rookies. They did it with significant injuries to their starting pitchers and lost their third baseman, Scott Sizemore, to a season-ending knee injury on the first full-squad workout of spring training. And they did it after losing right-hander Bartolo Colon to a 50-game suspension in August for a positive testosterone test, then re-signed him this winter.

The 51-year-old Melvin, a former big league catcher who grew up in Menlo Park and played at Cal, took over from the fired Bob Geren in June 2011. Melvin led the Diamondbacks to the NL West title in 2007 and also won 93 games in his rookie season with Seattle in 2003.

"We knew we had the right guy right from the get go. Continuity is important," Beane said. "It's really important. Once again last year was certainly enjoyable. It's easy to look at a year like last year and everybody has fun when you're winning. This relationship with Bob and myself and the front office and the players started when he took over."

Melvin received a three-year contract from Oakland late in the 2011 season. The A's went 47-52 after he took over that year.

His local ties are only a bonus. Melvin played three seasons with the San Francisco Giants.

"I was excited and impressed when Billy told me that Bob was available and accepting the manager role with us," owner Lew Wolff said. "As I observed Bob's leadership and very special drive, I was even more impressed with Billy's choice. I am so very pleased that we will have Bob with us for the foreseeable future. Bob's use of our talent was and is brilliant in my opinion."

Kottaras, acquired from Milwaukee before last year's trade deadline, batted .212 with six home runs and 19 RBIs in 27 games for Oakland after hitting .209 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 58 games with the Brewers.

Three A's remain eligible to file for arbitration Tuesday: left-hander Jerry Blevins and outfielders Brandon Moss and Seth Smith.

Internet activist, programmer Aaron Swartz dead at 26

(Reuters) - Internet activist and computer prodigy Aaron Swartz, who helped create an early version of the Web feed system RSS and was facing federal criminal charges in a controversial fraud case, has committed suicide at age 26, authorities said on Saturday.

Police found Swartz's body in his apartment in the New York City borough of Brooklyn on Friday, according to a spokeswoman for the city's chief medical examiner, which ruled the death a suicide by hanging.

Swartz is widely credited with being a co-author of the specifications for the Web feed format RSS 1.0, which he worked on at age 14, according to a blog post on Saturday from his friend, science fiction author Cory Doctorow.

RSS, which stands for Rich Site Summary, is a format for delivering to users content from sites that change constantly, such as news pages and blogs.

Over the years, he became an online icon for helping to make a virtual mountain of information freely available to the public, including an estimated 19 million pages of federal court documents from the PACER case-law system.

"Information is power. But like all power, there are those who want to keep it for themselves," Swartz wrote in an online "manifesto" dated 2008.

"The world's entire scientific and cultural heritage, published over centuries in books and journals, is increasingly being digitized and locked up by a handful of private corporations. ... sharing isn't immoral ? it's a moral imperative. Only those blinded by greed would refuse to let a friend make a copy," he wrote.

That belief - that information should be shared and available for the good of society - prompted Swartz to found the nonprofit group DemandProgress.

The group led a successful campaign to block a bill introduced in 2011 in the U.S. House of Representatives called the Stop Online Piracy Act.

The bill, which was withdrawn amid public pressure, would have allowed court orders to curb access to certain websites deemed to be engaging in illegal sharing of intellectual property.

Swartz and other activists objected on the grounds it would give the government too many broad powers to censor and squelch legitimate Web communication.

But Swartz faced trouble in July 2011, when he was indicted by a federal grand jury of wire fraud, computer fraud and other charges related to allegedly stealing millions of academic articles and journals from a digital archive at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

According to the federal indictment, Swartz - who was a fellow at Harvard University's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics - used MIT's computer networks to steal more than 4 million articles from JSTOR, an online archive and journal distribution service.

JSTOR did not press charges against Swartz after the digitized copies of the articles were returned, according to media reports at the time.

Swartz, who pleaded not guilty to all counts, faced 35 years in prison and a $1 million fine if convicted. He was released on bond. His trial was scheduled to start later this year.

'HARSH ARRAY OF CHARGES'

In a statement released Saturday, the family and partner of Swartz praised his "brilliance" and "profound" commitment to social justice, and struck out at what they said were decisions made at MIT and by prosecutors that contributed to his death.

"Aaron's death is not simply a personal tragedy. It is the product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach," the statement said.

"The U.S. Attorney's office pursued an exceptionally harsh array of charges, carrying potentially over 30 years in prison, to punish an alleged crime that had no victims," it added.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office said they wanted to respect the family's privacy and did "not feel it is appropriate to comment on the case at this time." MIT could not be reached for comment

Swartz's funeral is scheduled for Tuesday in Highland Park, Illinois. On Saturday, online tributes to Swartz flooded across cyberspace.

"Aaron had an unbeatable combination of political insight, technical skill and intelligence about people and issues," Doctorow, co-editor of the weblog Boing Boing, wrote on the site.

Doctorow wrote that Swartz had "problems with depression for many years."

Swartz also played a role in building the news-sharing website Reddit, but left the company after it was acquired by Wired magazine owner Conde Nast. Recalling that time of his life, Swartz described his struggles with dark feelings.

In an online account of his life and work, Swartz said he became "miserable" after going to work at the San Francisco offices of Wired after Reddit was acquired.

"I took a long Christmas vacation," he wrote. "I got sick. I thought of suicide. I ran from the police. And when I got back on Monday morning, I was asked to resign."

Tim Berners-Lee, who is credited as the most important figure in the creation of the World Wide Web, commemorated Swartz in a Twitter post on Saturday.

"Aaron dead," he wrote. "World wanderers, we have lost a wise elder. Hackers for right, we are one down. Parents all, we have lost a child. Let us weep."

Officials: Hostage in Somalia killed in rescue attempt

Al-Kataib Media / MAXPPP via EPA

This undated TV grab of footage by Al-Kataib Media shows Denis Allex, a French agent held by Somali militants.

By John Irish and Abdi Sheikh, Reuters

Updated at 3:40 p.m. ET: PARIS/MOGADISHU - A French intelligence officer held hostage in Somalia since 2009 was killed along with at least one other soldier during a botched rescue attempt by French troops on Friday night, the French Defense Ministry said Saturday.

"Commandos broke into where Allex was being detained last night and immediately faced strong resistance," Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told reporters.

Another commando is missing.

The deaths in Somalia coincided with the killing of a pilot in air strikes in Mali, however, striking a double blow to the start of a campaign that represents President Francois Hollande's biggest foreign policy test since his May election.

Adding confusion to the fallout of the agent's rescue effort, the Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahideen insurgent group holding Denis Allex said in a statement that he was still alive and being held at a location far from the base where French military helicopters attacked overnight.

The insurgent group said that the injured French commando "is now in the custody of the mujahideen."

"Several French soldiers were killed in the battle and many more were injured before they fled from the scene of battle, leaving behind some military paraphernalia and even one of their comrades on the ground," they said in the statement.

French Army chief Admiral Edouard Guillaud did not confirm whether this was true: "If he is alive then he could be, but he could also be hiding," he told reporters.

Both sides described a fierce firefight during the raid on the Horn of Africa country that France said was carried out by France's external intelligence agency for which Allex worked.

A Somali official in Bula Mareer, about 75 miles south of Mogadishu, said French helicopters attacked overnight.

"Helicopters attacked al Shabaab at 2.00 a.m. this morning. Two civilians died in the crossfire," said Ahmed Omar Mohamed, deputy chairman for lower Shabelle region.

An al Shabaab official who asked not to be named said they exchanged fire with French commandos. "Three helicopters dropped French commandos. We exchanged fire," the official said.

'Inhumane conditions'
Allex was one of two officers from his intelligence agency kidnapped by al Shabaab in Mogadishu in July 2009. His colleague, Marc Aubriere, escaped a month later but Allex had been held ever since in what Paris called "inhumane conditions."

The ministry said he was kidnapped while carrying out an aid mission with the Somali government. France has previously said the two men were in the Somali capital to train local forces.

A video of Allex pleading with Hollande to negotiate his release and save his life appeared on a website in October used by Islamist militant groups around the world. Reuters could not verify its authenticity.

Hollande said at the time the government was seeking to start talks with any party able to facilitate Allex's release.

After his abduction, al Shabaab issued a series of demands, which included an end to French support for the Somali government and the withdrawal of African Union peacekeepers, whose 17,600-strong troops are helping battle the rebels.

Under pressure from the peacekeeping troops and Somali government forces, al Shabaab has lost many of its major urban strongholds in south-central Somalia since it launched a rebellion against the Western-backed government in 2007.

The rebels, who want to impose their strict interpretation of sharia, or Islamic law, across the Horn of Africa state, withdrew from the capital Mogadishu in August last year and lost their last major bastion of Kismayu six weeks ago.

PST: Winners and losers of NWSL allocation

Early reaction to Friday?s National Women?s Soccer League allocation made the Portland Thorns FC the subject of a lot of envy, and with good reason. The sister franchise of Major League Soccer?s Portland Timbers not only got the league?s most marketable talent (Alex Morgan), Canada?s best player (Christine Sinclair), and arguably the most skilled player in the league (Tobin Heath), their ?other players? include two parts who project as above average contributors at the back (Rachel Buehler, Karina LeBlanc).

Within the league, reaction varied. Some were shocked by the Thorns? good fortune. For others, the excitement of a day seven weeks in the making overshadowed any perceived imbalance.

But if we?re talking winners and losers, we have to start with Portland. And unfortunately, since a number of teams were left without a marquee player, there are just as many losers as winners after the NWSL?s dispersal.

Winners

Portland Thorns FC -?Rachel Buehler, (27, D, USA), Tobin Heath (24, M, USA), Karina LeBlanc (32, G, CAN), Alex Morgan (23, F, USA), Marlene Sandoval (28, D, MEX), Luz Saucedo (29, D, MEX), Christine Sinclair (29, F, CAN)

Portland?s clearly the best team coming out of allocation, perhaps unfairly so. Most people would put Morgan and Sinclair among the best three players in the world, and they?ll have one Tobin Heath providing for them. Buehler?s capable of anchoring an NWSL defense while Karina LeBlanc started for a WPS champion in 2009. Thorns are stacked, have a strong spine, and are somewhat balanced. Opponents are right to be upset, even if the draw of Morgan and Sinclair is bound to make for good TV as the Timbers Army packs Jeld-Wen Field.

Seattle Reign FC -?Kaylyn Kyle (24, M, CAN), Teresa Noyola (22, M, MEX),?Megan Rapinoe (27, M, SEA), Amy Rodriguez (25, F, USA), Jenny Ruiz (29, D, MEX), Hope Solo (31, G, USA), Emily Zurrer (25, D, CAN)

With Solo and Rapinoe, there?s tons of star power on this team, and with Kyle and Zurrer, Laura Harvey and Amy Carnell got two quality players out of their Canadian allotment. Even if they didn?t get Alex Morgan, there?s a lot to like about this dispersal (after all, they did get the best goalkeeper in the world).

The key to whether this team can keep up with their Cascadia rivals is Rodriguez. If she can score like she did in her second WPS season (under Paul Riley in Philadelphia), Seattle?s results could match their ambition. If she?s the inconsistent player we saw in her first and third years (and recently with the national team)? Seattle will have to rely on Megan Rapinoe (when she returns), who was never the star in WPS she?s become internationally.

FC Kansas City -?Nicole Barnhart (31, G, USA), Lauren Cheney (25, M, USA), Renae Cuellar (24, F, MEX), Marylin Diaz (21, M, MEX), Becky Sauerbrunn (27, D, USA), Desiree Scott (25, M, CAN), Lauren Sesselmann (29, D, CAN)

Where are the goals going to come from? Free agency, you?d assume. Or, perhaps Lauren Cheney becomes a striker again (she?s only recently become a midfielder, and only for the national team).?If Kansas City moves Cheney back to her natural position, this becomes one of the league?s better allocation classes, even if it lacks one of the true big names. If not, free agency becomes much more important.

Goal prevention, however, is where Kansas City appears particularly strong. Sauerbrunn could be one of the league?s best defenders, with Sesselmann, Barnhart, and midfielder Desiree Scott rounding out what should be a formidable defense.

Boston Breakers - Anisa Guajardo (21, F, MEX), Adriana Leon (20, F, CAN), Sydney Leroux (22, F, USA), Heather Mitts (34, D, USA), Heather O?Reilly (28, M, USA), Cecilia Santiago (18, G, MEX), Rhian Wilkinson (30, D, CAN)

Boston got a player they can build around in 22-year-old striker Sydney Leroux. She?s young, talented, and marketable. For a team that didn?t have a big name attached to them pre-draft, getting Leroux was quite a boon.

They also got Mexico?s No. 1 in Cecilia Santiago ? a good young shot stopper whose decision-making will improve with consistent, higher level games. Until that trait?s developed, Santiago?s going to need help in defense, and it?s unclear this allocation gives her enough.

There?s a similar story in midfield. O?Reilly only plays wide right, which means if the Breakers plan on connecting with Leroux and their two other young attackers, free agency and next week?s college draft will be key.

Losers

Western New York Flash -?Carli Lloyd (30, M, USA), Bryana McCarthy (21, D, CAN), Veronica Perez (24, F, MEX), Jo-Ann Robinson (23, F, CAN), Pamela Tajonar (28, G, MEX), Abby Wambach (32, F, USA)

The Flash were the team short-changed by allocation, getting only six players. They did, however, get the one player they coveted: Abby Wambach. The financial impact of getting the local hero is huge.?They also get Olympic hero Carli Lloyd and a Mexican attacker (Perez) who should partner well with Wambach.

Unfortunately, the Flash got little else. They may have received the worst Canadian allocation, and it remains to be seen if Pamela Tajonar will be up to the task in goal.

The Flash may have gotten one of the marquee players, but if Wambach?s ankles can?t hold up over the course of a full season, this dispersal could ?look terrible at year?s end.

Sky Blue FC -?Melanie Booth (29, D, CAN),?Jill Loyden (27, G, USA), Monica Ocampo (26, F, MEX), Kelley O?Hara (24, D, USA), Christine Rampone (37, D, USA), Lydia Rangel (21, M, MEX), Sophie Schmidt (24, M, CAN)

Rampone gives the organization a face to build around, but without one of the brighter stars from the national team, this allocation has to be seen as a disappointment. Ocampo is a decent attacker, and Schmidt gives them a quality player in midfield, but the New Jersey-based team got short-changed on U.S. national teamers without getting enough to make up for it.

Chicago Red Stars - Shannon Boxx (35, M, USA), Maribel Dominguez (34, F, MEX), Dinora Garza (24, M, MEX), Amy LePeilbet (30, D, USA), Erin McLeod (25, G, CAN), Carmelina Moscato (28, D, CAN), Keelin Winters (24, M, USA)

It?s a very balanced allocation for Chicago, but one that relies heavily on two players in their mid-30s. With LePeilbet, Moscato, and McLeod, the defense has a strong core, while Turbine Potsdam?s Keelin Winters could help the group transcend its lack of name value.

But despite getting seven solid players, the group is still without one of the marquee U.S. players. As a result, Chicago lack the high-end talent you see in other teams? dispersals.

Dominguez will need help, and with LePeilbet unlikely to be healthy to start the season (knee), the roster is full of question marks. There are a lot of ways this can go wrong.

Washington Spirit ? Ashlyn Harris, (27, G, USA), Alina Garciamendez (21, D, MEX), Robin Gayle (27, D, CAN), Ali Krieger (28, D, USA), Lori Lindsey (32, M, USA), Diana Matheson (28, M, CAN), Teresa Worbis (29, M, MEX)

Curiously, Washington gets three U.S. national team players who didn?t feature at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Krieger was injured, Harris didn?t make the team, while Lindsey was only an alternate. Each player, however has ties to D.C., all having played for the Washington Freedom.

While decent at the back, this group looks weak, particularly going forward. Worbis has a decent goal rate for the Mexican national team, but she?s unlikely to be a major goal producer in this league. Washington?s ability to acquire a goal scorer in free agency (or the draft) might make-or-break their first season.

Final verdict

It?s tempting to be overly critical of these types of ventures, mostly because we tend to adopt our own standards in lieu of some other unambiguous goals. While the days before dispersal saw quotes from U.S. Soccer laud the value of competitive balance, there were clearly other factors at play. Team and player preferences played a big part and are likely one of the biggest reasons Portland and Seattle sit so pretty today.

As for the other teams, Chicago, Sky Blue and Washington have enough history in their communities to make their teams work, particularly given the subsidies the federations are providing with player salaries. Western New York and Boston each got a marketable star, while Kansas City was given a competitive team with two players (Cheney, Sauerbrunn) capable of being faces for their fanbase.

Could the results have been better? Perhaps, but that gets us back to standards. Are you judging this based on parity or other considerations, considerations U.S. Soccer made clear were going to be a factor from the onset. Ultimately, no teams were left far behind, even if the apparent desire to put high profile players (Morgan, Solo, Rapinoe) in marketable situations created some imbalance.

Hopefully highlights of Alex Morgan shooting into Portland?s north end will make it worthwhile.

I was very hopeful for this product. I was recently diagnosed with Adult onset Deafness and am slowing losing my hearing (I'm 35). I can not hear my phone ring, and was really hoping that this product would help. When it works, it works. But it connects and disconnects with the phone repeatedly. It will be synced with the phone when I leave the house and it will be un-synced by the time I get to the car. I'm giving a 3 start rating because there isn't a viable replacement to this product at this time, and it is ok, when it works. There is a bracelet that another manf. makes, I might give that a try.

Sarah + John: An Intimate and Glamorous Texas Weddng by Q Weddings

In Texas, bigger isn?t always better, and this romantically intimate 15-guest wedding at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines is a case in point. Planned in only eight weeks with the help of the bride?s sister, interior design expert Lauren Haskett of Material Girls, the event channeled ?soft Parisian glamour? and was infused with the bride?s favorite colors: seafoam green, blush, and coral. Every detail was a study in vibrant yet sophisticated beauty, from the lush floral designs, featuring ruffled garden roses and open peonies, to the bride?s Art Deco?inspired gown, a ravishing dress with an intricately beaded, crystal-accented bodice and a skirt of white feathers. It was all captured through the lens of Suzi Q. Varin, whose authentic, artful photos dazzle with their aura of timelessness.

What?s your love story? How did you meet, fall in love, and get engaged?

John and I met at a courthouse in a small town in South Texas. We were both working as landmen for different oil companies; I was there researching public records every day, and John was always coming in to check on his crew, which included his sister, Larin. After eight months of John and I saying ?hello? and nothing more, Larin approached me one day to do some investigation for John, and the next day he asked me out in person. The following day, we went to dinner and had an amazing time, despite some news I shared that might have deterred him. I had recently accepted an internship position that meant I would be leaving soon for Europe. Despite my upcoming departure, we proceeded to fall fast for each other and to date for seven months of that year long distance. When I returned to the U.S., we went on another adventure together?this time to work on an oil and gas project in Ohio. During a trip back home to Texas to visit my family, John popped the question during some brief, rainy alone time at a park. We shared the good news with our families and let them know that we wanted to have a small wedding and a short engagement. With our families? support, we amazingly managed to pull everything off in eight weeks!

Did you use a wedding planner or day-of coordinator? What was the planning process like for you?

I have my oldest sister, Lauren Haskett of Material Girls and Lauren Haskett Fine Design, to thank for her vision, ideas, and the huge role she played in making sure everything was elegant and memorable. She was the mastermind behind details both big and small, ranging from envisioning the wedding canopy, floral scheme, reception lighting, and table arrangements to place cards and invitations. Additionally, the resort where we got married, the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines, was extremely accommodating and coordinated many elements of our wedding, including handling the catering and recommending a great florist.?

How did you choose your venue?

During a family discussion the weekend of our engagement, my sister mentioned that she had heard Lost Pines was a beautiful haunt in the Texas Hill Country. Miraculously, the venue was available on our desired weekend, Cinco de Mayo, and one phone call by John later, it was a done deal. We got to scope out the different locations available at the resort, and I immediately fell in love with the pond. Because it was such a small wedding, everyone arrived two days early, and we enjoyed some great family time, taking advantage of the pool, trails, and other amenities.

Can you tell us a little bit about the details of your wedding and your sources of inspiration?

Theme and palette

We started the wedding planning with a catchphrase: soft Parisian glamour. This spilled over into the use of some of my favorite colors: seafoam green, white, and blush. The site we chose for the ceremony was next to a pond, which looked beautiful next to the seafoam green canopy under which we were married. The flowers themselves were blush, peach, coral, and white, which made for a look that was both soft and vibrant and in keeping with the soft Parisian glamour motif. For the reception dinner, strands of overhead lights provided a dynamic backdrop for the simple yet bold contrast of the black and white stripes of the tablecloth paired with the soft colors of the flowers. A seafoam green BHLDN resin cake stand, handwritten chalkboard menu, and small, etched pewter vases provided additional pops of glamour.

Bouquets and boutonnieres

Large garden roses and peonies in white, blush, peach, and coral tones comprised my bouquet, as well as the flowers adorning the canopy at the ceremony and the table at the reception. John?s boutonniere was made up of solid white flowers.??

Ceremony d?cor

The focal point of our outdoor ceremony was the beautiful flower-bedecked canopy, which was complemented by the pond setting. Simple white chairs were set out, and the beauty of nature took care of the rest.

Reception d?cor

Our reception dinner came together at one long table, with a stark black-and-white striped tablecloth for timeless drama and soft accents for more Parisian glamour. Our flowers were held in small pewter vases, and personalized black and white place cards coordinated with the tablecloth.

Can you describe your dress and your wedding day look for us?

The entire skirt of my wedding dress was completely covered in ostrich feathers, and that is what initially drew me to it. The beaded top and drop waist gave it a vintage feel that could hold its own next to the feathers. I actually decided on my wedding dress without ever seeing it in person. I originally became obsessed with a picture of it online, but since I was working out of state I couldn?t try it on myself. I enlisted my sister, Kathryn, to try it on for me, and she and our mother sent me tons of pictures, eyeballed what size I would need, and assured me it was just as beautiful in person as I had hoped. It fit perfectly with no alterations necessary at all! Instead of a veil, I wore two jeweled headbands that were connected to form a circle. My shoes were white with chunky, rhinestone-covered heels, the thickness of which made walking on the grass much easier. My other jewelry was simple?stud earrings and stacked bracelets.

Out of a desire to show off the back of my dress, I decided to walk down the aisle sans veil. I found a jeweled headband that I loved and bought two just in case. I arrived for my hair appointment armed with a picture of Charlize Theron with the goal of emulating her side bun and jeweled headband brilliance. The stylist suggested using the second headband, cutting the extra ribbon off of both of them, and connecting them into an asymmetrical halo woven into my hair.

For my makeup, I decided to go with something a little more dramatic than my usual look; the bold look was anchored by a smoky eye created with purple and gray shadows and defined brows.

What did your bridesmaids wear?

My sisters, Lauren and Kathryn, served as matron and maid of honor. Because it was such a small wedding, they didn?t stand during the ceremony, and in lieu of bouquets they wore bracelets matching the ones I wore. Our goal was to find beautiful dresses for them that looked special but didn?t scream ?bridesmaid.? We found them both, as well as the mother of the bride?s dress, in one fell swoop at BHLDN. Kathryn wore a knee-length dress in purple, her favorite color, and jazzed it up with seafoam green heels. Lauren?s dress was a champagne hue with a detailed neckline, which she paired with nude heels. Everyone looked beautiful while staying true to their own sense of style.

What did your groom wear?

John wore a charcoal suit paired with a purple-toned shirt and tie. His black ostrich boots complemented the ostrich feathers of my dress, and his engraved cufflinks were his wedding present from me.

Did you include any religious, cultural, or family traditions in your ceremony?

My dad walking me down the aisle was a really special moment. Also, John?s dad was in charge of holding the rings during the ceremony, as his dad did for him.

What kind of ceremony music did you choose?

The music at our ceremony was actually a surprise from my family. They found a great classical guitarist who played instrumental music throughout our ceremony. At the end, he performed and sang ?Edelweiss,? a song I love from The Sound of Music, with an additional verse of benediction at the end.

What were your favorite moments of the day?

John and I kept with tradition and didn?t see each other the day of our wedding until the actual ceremony, but he did write me a very sweet note that he had my mom deliver to me while I was getting dressed. Reading it was one of my favorite moments.

Did you experience any disasters or calamities leading up to the wedding or on the day of the wedding itself that you can laugh about now?

My mother had booked hair appointments for all the girls at a great salon. When the salon called me the week of our wedding to confirm our appointments, I wasn?t paying attention and thought I was on the phone with a different salon that we weren?t going to use. I let the salon know that we had made other arrangements and cancelled everyone?s appointments. The next day it hit me that I had the salon names mixed up and had to call the salon back to admit my lunacy. Fortunately, they were able to rework all of us into the schedule and did a great job on everyone?s hair.

What kind of advice would you offer to future brides?

Bringing along a picture to show your hairstylist takes very little effort, but it is definitely worth it. Doing a trial run of hair and makeup is extremely worthwhile, even if it only means that you find out which salon not to go to!

Strong China trade data underpins risk assets broadly

TOKYO (Reuters) - Risk assets from Asian shares to oil climbed broadly on Thursday as much stronger-than-expected Chinese trade data magnified positive momentum from global markets overnight, strengthening signs of recovery in the world's second-largest economy.

European shares will likely track Asia higher. Financial spreadbetters predicted London's FTSE 100, Paris's CAC-40 and Frankfurt's DAX would open as much as 0.2 percent higher. A 0.3 percent gain in U.S. stock futures hinted at a solid Wall Street start.

China's exports grew 14.1 percent in December from a year ago to hit a seven-month peak, handsomely beating market expectations of a 4 percent rise.

Imports grew only 6 percent on the year, still double the forecast, leaving a trade surplus of $31.6 billion from a surplus of $19.6 billion in November and sharply above a forecast of $19.7 billion.

But the outlook for 2013 remains cloudy with U.S. and European demand for Chinese goods still subdued.

"China has shown signs of cyclical recovery since last fall, and the trade figures offered a piece of evidence," said Tetsuro Ii, the chief executive of Commons Asset Management. "But the country is not expected to log as high a growth rate as in the past. Budget wrangling keeps downside risks for the U.S. economy intact while expectations remain low for European growth."

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.7 percent, advancing immediately on the data after hovering around levels barely changed from Wednesday, and neared its highest level since August 2011 hit last week.

Hong Kong shares rose 0.8 percent to a new 19-month high, with gains picking up in growth-sensitive counters.

The economic report from China, Australia's largest trading partner, boosted Australian shares 0.3 percent higher and the Australian dollar up 0.3 percent to $1.0542, having hit a three-week high of $1.0554 at one point. The Australian dollar rose to as high as 92.98 yen, its highest since September 2008.

China's imports of iron ore rose 7.8 percent in December from the previous month to a record 70.94 million tonnes and its crude oil purchases edged up 1.3 percent for the month, preliminary data from the General Administration of Customs showed on Thursday.

London copper was up 0.3 percent at $8,100.50 a tonne while U.S. crude futures rose 0.4 percent to $93.48 a barrel and Brent futures added 0.1 percent to $111.86 as the Chinese data stoked hopes for firmer commodities demand.

"The growth in imports has been higher than expectations, which speaks highly for Chinese oil demand and global demand as a whole," said Michael McCarthy, chief market analyst, CMC Markets Sydney. "Clearly, it will be seen as a positive for oil."

WEAK YEN BOOSTS NIKKEI

Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock average advanced 0.8 percent as the yen resumed its weakening trend after a pause in the last couple of sessions, buoying exporters.

Foreign investors remained net buyers of Japanese stocks last week for an eighth consecutive week, government data showed on Thursday.

"Investors can't jump off the bus because this unusual 'Japan boom' among hedge funds is set to last until an election in July, with the government launching steps aimed at short-term positive impacts," said Ii at Commons Asset Management.

The Japanese economy is expected to recover a little in 2013 if Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's policies of massive fiscal spending, aggressive monetary easing and a weaker yen produce the momentum needed to lift Japan from stubborn deflation.

The dollar had risen about 12 percent over the past two months against the yen, contributing to the Nikkei's 22 percent jump in the same period, on expectations for bolder monetary easing from the Bank of Japan under Japan's new government.

The dollar was up 0.3 percent to 88.11 yen, inching closer to its highest since July 2010 at 88.48 reached on Friday. The euro was also up 0.1 percent to 114.95 yen. It last week hit 115.995 yen, its highest since July 2011.

The euro eased 0.2 percent to $1.3042 ahead of the European Central Bank's policy meeting, where it is expected to keep interest rates steady.

Spain will test investor appetite for its debt when Madrid holds its first debt sales of 2013 later in the session. The Spanish auction is being watched for clues on the timing of a much-anticipated request by the government for international financial aid.

Wariness over debt issues is not confined to the euro zone, with investors also watching U.S. debt ceiling negotiations after lawmakers narrowly avoided the fiscal cliff at the turn of the year.

Sentiment improved slightly in Asian credit markets, tightening the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index by 1 basis point.

So long as you show back up to take you're place. I will reserve it for 48 hours. If you can't get a profile up by then, just stop by and say 'hey I still want it' and I'll restart the clock.
