(AP) ? The Sandy Hook section of Newtown was a gathering place this weekend for hundreds of people drawn to the scene of the recent massacre to share in the community's mourning and come to terms with the shocking school tragedy.

The village's downtown was clogged with traffic Sunday, with license plates from all across New England and beyond.

Residents across Newtown, meanwhile, were seeking to move forward through faith, community and a determination to seize their future. Many have taken advantage of counseling services.

Both groups are trying in their own way to cope with the puzzling Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that took the lives of 20 children and six adults. Police say the gunman killed his mother before heading to the school and committed suicide afterward.

People with bouquets of flowers, teddy bears and cameras walked along the closed road to the makeshift memorial near the school. Mark Burkhart brought his wife and daughter from Wingdale, N.Y., to pay their respects.

"We felt we had to come here to grieve a little bit," he said. "You find yourself not sure what to do or what to say, so this kind of helps."

Connor Collier, 21, of Newtown, said visitors earlier in the week were mostly with the media. But that changed during the weekend to "just regular people" from as far away as Washington State and Florida.

"Frankly, I like this a lot better. Everybody wants to help," said Collier, who has spent the past week near the village Christmas tree selling green and white bracelets that read, "Angels of Sandy Hook." He said he has raised $40,000 for a fund established for the victims.

A man dressed as Santa greeted visitors Sunday while a group of saxophone players from Newtown High School serenaded the crowd with Christmas carols.

Anne Spillane, 51, of Sandy Hook, drove some of the band members, including her daughter. She said the brother of one band member was killed in the shooting. He was one of several victims the Sillane family knew.

She said she and others in town have been buoyed by the outpouring of support.

A family that lives about three hours away in New Bedford, Mass., came Saturday with a life-sized Santa Claus that held a scroll with the names of all the victims engraved on it, Sillane said.

And a police officer from New Britain gave her a box of homemade Christmas ornaments with the names of each victim on them, Sillane said.

"I gave those to our monsignor, and he's going to give them to the families," she said. "People are just so good. We understand. They just want to do something."

At religious services in Newtown on Sunday, parishioners recognized their church leaders for helping them to cope with the shooting deaths.

After the Sunday service at Newtown's Trinity Episcopal Church, the Rev. Kathleen Adams-Shepherd received hugs and kisses from a long line of parishioners. She choked up as she read the names of the victims and offered a prayer for all of them, including gunman Adam Lanza and his slain mother, Nancy.

Monsignor Robert Weiss of the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church thanked the community for giving him strength to get through a week filled with funerals. St. Rose of Lima lost eight children and two adults in the massacre.

"This has been the worst week of my life," Weiss said.

Deacon Rick Scinto of St. Rose of Lima said church officials will be teamed with professional counselors and therapists to provide assistance.

"I don't see us taking a lead role, but I certainly see us taking a cooperative role in any kind of counseling that they need. We have our niche. We're religious and we can talk about God and how the Lord figures in this whole mess," Scinto said.

To deal with the short-term trauma, the state sent dozens of mental health professionals to Newtown. Sessions were available every day, at a half-dozen locations. Relief also has been provided by therapy and service dogs, massage therapists, acupuncturists and art therapists, from around Connecticut and the nation.

Dennis Stratford, who works for the school district, happened to be making a delivery to Sandy Hook Elementary when the gunman attacked. He saw dead children. He saw the remains of dead children on those who survived. He waited agonizing minutes for his own child to emerge unharmed from the school. Two of his neighbors' children did not.

"I go home and cry every night, and I cry every morning," Stratford said.

He went to one counseling session, but the horrific images remain. What helps more is work: sorting through the warehouses full of gifts, delivering them where they need to go or doing whatever else needs to be done for his town.

"There were nine minutes of evil, and an infinity of goodness after that," Stratford said, sitting on a forklift loaded with gifts. "This is therapy for me."

Rohit Savant Expects the Gold Bull Market to Pause in 2013

The Gold Report: Rohit, in a recent interview you said gold is "not a guaranteed safe haven." In your view, what are effective ways to preserve capital?

Rohit Savant: If you're talking about preserving capital, it depends a great extent on your timeframe and your risk appetite.

"When the fiscal cliff debate intensifies as we get closer to the deadline, we may see the gold price rise in response."

If you're looking at the short term and want no fluctuations in your principal, the best way to preserve it would be either certificates of deposit or T-bills and hope that inflation doesn't rise significantly.

But if you are looking at the longer term and are willing to take some ups and downs in your capital, a better way of preserving or increasing your capital would be investments in equities, real estate and gold. You could reduce the risk a bit by purchasing dividend-paying equities.

TGR: Do you believe gold is an effective way to preserve capital?

RS: Over the long term, it is. In the short term, you are going to see fluctuations in prices.

TGR: What range do you expect gold to trade in through the first half of 2013?

RS: We expect it to stay more or less in the same range that it did this year, probably between $1,550-1,800/ounce (oz) for the first half of 2013.

TGR: Are you seeing a similar path for silver?

RS: In the case of silver, we have a more bearish view. One reason is that silver prices are going to be negatively affected by increases in supply. Today silver prices are significantly higher than the average cash cost for producing silver. So we expect that a lot of fresh supply will come onstream.

Another reason is expected lower investor interest. Silver tends to be more volatile than gold, so you might see sharper declines in prices with lower investment demand.

TGR: Does that mean you prefer gold to silver right now?

RS: At this point, we definitely see gold as a better investment than silver. We don't expect any significant increases in gold prices, but we don't think that gold prices will decline substantially from where they've been this year.

TGR: Is there a possibility that 2013 will be the first year in the last 12 when the gold price finishes the year lower than when it started?

RS: Yes, it will likely be the first year to end in a lower price in over a decade.

TGR: If you met a goldbug who is unabashedly bullish on the gold price and he challenged your price position on gold, how would you respond to that person?

RS: We face this situation quite often because our view on gold has not been as bullish as a lot of other market participants. Our response to them is that we think a lot of the factors that are being cited as reasons for gold prices going up are already factored into the price of gold.

"Central banks have been doing pretty much what we expect private investors to do, which is wait for gold prices to soften before they step in as buyers."

For instance, there are a lot of problems with the global economy. We're not denying that. We are just saying that these are problems that have been known now for several years and have already been factored into the price of gold. So gold prices won't skyrocket. But on the other hand, the global problems are a reason we think that gold prices will not decline sharply either.

TGR: In early December, we saw commodities including gold and silver sold off in response to concerns regarding America's "fiscal cliff." In your view, what are the three biggest downside risks to gold right now?

RS: The biggest risk to gold would be that investors lose interest. But we don't think that investors will lose interest, central banks will stop buying gold, or there will be a sudden increase in the supply of gold. These could all be potential downside risks. That said, we do not expect that any of these risks will materialize in 2013 or the near future.

The biggest risk for us is not so much that prices would go down, but that they won't rise substantially. We don't see a sharp decline in gold prices going forward. We don't see gold going up much. We see a sideways to potentially slightly lower range, but nothing significant.

TGR: What about the fiscal cliff itself? Is that a concern for the gold price?

RS: When the fiscal cliff debate intensifies as we get closer to the deadline, we may see the gold price rise in response. So the fiscal cliff could be positive for gold prices during December. I think the slight softness that we're seeing in gold prices recently is really the marketinvestors holding off to see if prices could decline further. Gold could potentially go down to around $1,680/oz and get some support at that level. Then you might see some investors coming back, buying gold in response to the fiscal cliff issue. Once in 2013, whatever the outcome of the fiscal cliff, it would result in softening of economic growth, which would weigh on gold prices during the first half of next year.

TGR: The World Gold Council (WGC) reports that the Indian market is showing signs of recovery in gold demand, up 9% to 223.1 tons from 204.8 tons in the third quarter of 2011. The WGC press release reads, "Indians appear to have acclimatized to recent price trends and have been buying into a rising market." What's behind that change in sentiment and do you believe it's likely to continue in 2013?

RS: The buying of gold for Indians is very deeply engrained in the culture. When a festival is coming up, or if it is marriage season, Indians are going to buy gold. It's highly unlikely that they would refrain from buying gold because of higher gold prices.

TGR: But they have cut back purchases in the past.

RS: The increase in demand in the third quarter, in a rising price environment, may have occurred because of pent-up demand. Demand from the first half of the year had been cut back by various factors.

Indians may buy a smaller amount of gold per person if the price goes up. But they're not likely to stop buying gold just because the price has increased. The demand is going to be there.

TGR: China is another culture where gold is much more prevalent in the lives of people than it is in the West. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that China, for the first time ever, will allow interbank gold trading with Shanghai as a major gold trading center. Do you expect that to have any impact on investment demand?

RS: That is something that would increase investment demand, in that China is trying to open up its markets. It's all part of China liberalizing its financial markets.

TGR: Another report says Deutsche Bank is predicting gold will rise above $2,200/oz in 2013. Part of the reason is that it believes China eventually wants the yuan to challenge the U.S. dollar as the world's reserve currency.

To do that the Chinese Central Bank is going to need to buy more gold in a big way. Right now it's currently ranked sixth in total gold reserves, at least the reported gold reserves. Does that strike you as a credible thesis or is that something that you believe is still a long way off?

RS: I'm not sure that China would want its currency to be used as a reserve currency because that would inherently push up the value, which would in turn hurt the country's exports. I don't believe it's going to happen over the next several years. It will take a number of years for any currency to challenge the U.S. dollar.

"The PGMs definitely have some promising fundamentals."

I believe the gold that China holds right now is about 1.8% or 2% of the total reserves. As for buying gold, the Chinese Central Bank does not release that information quickly. The last time it bought gold, nothing was said about it until a few years later. It could be buying gold right now and we won't know about it until China discloses that information.

I think that central bank buying is price supportive, but I don't believe that it's something that would push gold prices sharply higher. Central banks have been doing pretty much what we expect private investors to do, which is wait for gold prices to soften before they step in as buyers.

We saw that this year in March when gold prices came down. Central banks added on a net basis 2.3 million ounces (Moz) of gold to their holdings. Central banks followed the same logic again in July, when gold prices were moving sideways at the lower end of the range for 2012, adding 2.95 Moz of gold to their holdings on a net basis. This was the largest net purchase of gold by central banks for 2012.

Bottom line, central banks are not buying gold when prices are going up. Therefore, the impact of central bank gold buying is more likely to be price supportive than price positive.

TGR: At investment conferences across North America, senior gold producers are routinely making presentations about why their companies are better investments than gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Much of their arguments are based on the idea that gold ETFs own far less gold than they claim. What's your view?

RS: The gold that ETFs own is publicly disclosed and transparent, so I'm not sure how companies can make that claim. As far as talking up investing in their companies, that's their jobthey're supposed to get investors interested in owning their stocks.

TGR: Does CPM have any analysis on ETFs versus senior gold producers? Performance-related data comparing those two?

RS: We haven't done any specific analysis. But gold ETFs basically track the gold price, so it's really a question of whether you are invested in physical gold or whether you want to invest in equities.

Equities do have the advantage of performing better for the most part over the long term. But in recent months, we've actually seen gold equities get slammed for various reasons. One of the biggest reasons is that their costs are getting out of hand.

TGR: If the gold price remains range bound near current levels, does that make gold producers more appealing?

RS: Only if gold producers are able to control their costs. If producers can prove to the markets that they can control costs, then equities would be a good investment compared to gold. Also, if gold prices remain range bound, and that prompts miners to shift their focus to higher-grade gold, that could potentially reduce costs and again make them more attractive as an investment. So it depends on how the mining companies deal with it. If they let their costs escalate and the price of gold stays sideways, their margins will get squeezed, so that will make them a bad investment.

TGR: Is there is a particular jurisdiction or jurisdictions that CPM Group sees as being more appealing for gold production?

RS: For gold production, there is a jurisdiction that is not appealing. South Africa is not very appealing at this point. The atmosphere surrounding the mining industry in South Africa at the moment is pretty complicated.

A lot of factors are at play. The country has deep-level mining, which makes it difficult for miners to control costs. You also have additional problems related to labor and infrastructure and government policies. All of those things collectively make South Africa a fairly difficult environment to mine in.

TGR: Is your near-term forecast for other precious metals like platinum, palladium and rhodium more encouraging than it is for gold and certainly for silver?

RS: The PGMs definitely have some promising fundamentals. The supply side is constrained because a lot of supply comes from South Africa. Those mines are facing the same problems as the gold mining industry in that country. So the potential is there for supply to possibly decline.

Then you have the fabrication demand side where there is little substitution for PGMs. For example, in the case of auto catalysts, any other combination of metals used would not reduce emissions at the same level of efficiency as the PGMs do. So you have expectations of heavy fabrication demand and the potential for constraint supplies that are both supportive and positive for the PGMs.

TGR: What advice can you give to precious metals investors in general that they can put to good use in 2013?

RS: It's about doing your homework. When you're looking at equities, you need to look at a number of factors besides metal prices. For example, investors need to look at the management, specific country risk, and within country risk you have government policies, infrastructure. There's also the mining grades of the deposits and the costs to get the metal out of the ground. Costs are especially important to pay attention to in the current environment where mining cash costs almost across the board are rising pretty substantially.

TGR: Are you predicting cash costs among gold miners are going to rise in 2013?

RS: We do think gold mining cash costs will continue to rise. One of the problems is the rising gold price itself. That has been encouraging miners to mine lower-grade ore, which in turn pushes cash costs up. Another problem is mining regions, such as South Africa, where all these other additional factors are pushing cash costs up. So, yes, we do think the costs for gold mining will continue to rise in 2013.

We have data going through the second quarter of this year. What we saw is a peak in the profit margins in mid-2011 when gold prices were high. What we saw in the second half of 2011 and the first half of 2012 is the slight decline in gold prices and a continued increase in the costs. So companies' profit margins got squeezed. We think this will continue if mining companies don't curb their cost increases. This is the biggest problem or threat to the gold mining industry.

TGR: What are the biggest inputs into those rising costs for miners?

RS: The biggest input cost is labor, which represents about 50% of total cash costs for gold mining. We keep hearing of strikes and shut downs and those kind of problems. That is not good for the largest component of costs, labor. Fuel, for instance, only accounts for about 8% to 9% of costs. And about the same amount for utility costs, such as electricity and water.

TGR: Were fuel costs 8% or 9% five years ago or were they a smaller percentage? It's a number in a vacuum otherwise.

RS: Fuel costs were a little bit less than 8% or 9% five years ago. Fuel costs haven't been the biggest issue for cash costs. It's labor costs. The inflation in labor costs is what's pushing up the whole cash cost curve.

TGR: Are there any parting thoughts you have for our readers?

RS: A lot of times our gold outlook comes out sounding bearish when it's not. I just want to say that we do think gold prices will stay high. We just don't think that they're going to skyrocket.

TGR: Where was CPM Group in its forecast for 2012?

RS: We had an annual average of $1,620/oz at the beginning of the year. The average price for gold so far in 2012 is about $1,670/oz. So we were lower than the average. We did do well compared to 8590% of the other analysts whose price forecasts are way, way higher.

TGR: Thanks for your insights.

South Sudan must punish those who downed UN helicopter: Russia

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia called on South Sudan on Saturday to punish those responsible for shooting down a U.N. helicopter, killing its four Russian crew, and take steps to ensure such incidents do not happen again.

A Russian Foreign Ministry statement named the victims and said the "tragic occurrence" in the African nation on Friday underscored the need to provide security for U.N. peacekeeping missions.

"We call on the government of South Sudan to conduct a proper investigation of the incident, to punish those responsible and undertake all measures to guarantee nothing like this happens in the future," it said.

The Mi-8 helicopter owned by Russian air charter company Nizhnevartovskavia was working under a U.N. contract on a reconnaissance mission in an area where the SPLA, South Sudan's army, has been fighting rebels led by David Yau Yau, according to a U.N. source.

The SPLA first denied it had shot down the helicopter but later said it had mistaken it for a Sudanese plane supplying rebels, and expressed regret.

The Russian statement said that the downing "raises the issue of the provision of security of U.N. peacekeeping missions with new acuteness", and that host nations must take the issue extremely seriously.

Could Climate Change Boost Toxic Algal Blooms in the Oceans?

Preliminary research hints that ocean acidification may promote some types of algal blooms that make people and animals sick

pseudo-nitzschia HARMFUL DIATOM: Pseudo-nitzschia, pcitured here, is among the species that produce toxins and cause harmful algal blooms. Image: Courtesy of Raphael Kudela, UCSC

In 1799 about a hundred Aleut hunters working for a Russian-American trading group died in Alaska?s Peril Strait only two hours after eating black mussels collected there. Those who survived did so because they threw up after desperately consuming gunpowder, tobacco and alcohol to purge toxin from their bodies. This was the first recorded incidence of paralytic shellfish poisoning on the west coast of North America.

The Aleuts were killed by natural poisons known as toxins produced by certain algae that were trapped in the mussels? food-gathering filters. Filter feeders like shellfish, some finned fish and other animals concentrate the toxins present in these algae.

Physical and chemical conditions cause populations of algae to wax and wane in cycles. Out of the vast diversity of plankton in the oceans, the worst offenders are a few species of diatoms, dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria, collectively called harmful algae. For example, some diatoms make domoic acid, which causes vomiting, cramping, headache and even seizures and memory loss; some dinoflagellates produce saxitoxin, which causes numbness, staggering and respiratory failure, among other symptoms.

Toxic blooms can occur naturally when deep, nutrient-rich water wells up in places like the west coasts of North and South America. They can be amplified by land runoff of fertilizers and other chemicals that provide nutrients such as phosphorus. Algal blooms have been increasing in coastal waters nearly everywhere.

In mid-December 2012 recreational mussel harvesting was closed along the entire Oregon coast because the mussels were contaminated with paralytic shellfish toxins. In 2002 razor clam harvesting was prohibited for the full season in Washington State because of high domoic acid levels. Florida?s coastline has frequent outbreaks of the toxic dinoflagellate Karenia brevis, whose toxins can escape into the air and cause severe respiratory distress. Today in the U.S. alone such incidents cause $82 million in public health costs and economic damages to fisheries and tourism annually, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These costs include emergency room visits and other medical treatment, lost work productivity, and fewer dollars reaching local businesses if beaches and sport or commercial fishing is curtailed.

Now scientists are investigating whether climate change could contribute to toxic blooms. As atmospheric carbon dioxide increases, the greenhouse gas is absorbed into ocean water, making it more acidic. The most obvious peril is that marine organisms like clams and sea snails either can?t build their calcium carbonate shells or find their housing harder to maintain. Acidifying ocean conditions could cause toxic algae to become nastier and more abundant. Conversely, the organisms might simply adapt without becoming more poisonous; their numbers could even be reduced.

Of course, researchers must assess ocean acidification as one of many simultaneous stressors in the oceanic environment. Scientists don?t fully understand the relationship between growth rates, toxin production and ocean conditions for these algae. Some species are known to ramp-up toxin production as a defense against predators, others in response to low supplies of crucial nutrients. Another possibility is that the toxins are simply a way for a diatom or dinoflagellate to store excess nutrients, such as carbon or nitrogen, rather than a stress response, says microbial ecologist William Cochlan of San Francisco State University.

To see how nutrient limitation and acidification interact, Avery Tatters, a graduate student in David Hutchins?s lab at the University of Southern California, cultured the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia fraudulenta taken from southern California waters, where it blooms frequently. The species produces domoic acid.

Google reportedly snags key Samsung marketing VP for Motorola

Google may be doing more to boost Motorola's presence than whipping up a new device strategy, if rumors are true. AllThingsD claims that Google has poached Samsung's American VP for strategic marketing, Brian Wallace, for a roughly equivalent role at Motorola. The move would not only give Motorola a high-profile executive who's had stints at companies like RIM, but one who's not afraid of taking the competition head-on: Samsung's TV ads poking fun at iPhone launch queues appeared under Wallace's tenure. We've asked Google, Motorola and Samsung whether or not the shift is real; Motorola won't comment in either direction, and we haven't heard from the remaining two. If there's any truth to the story, Motorola might have a stronger carrier-independent sales pitch than the occasional dystopic TV spot.

Even if Lionel Messi and his Barcelona teammates had no coach to guide them, you would think long and hard about betting against what is perhaps the greatest collection of players ever assembled by one club. Their success is built on foundations so solid that it has seemingly become self-perpetuating, almost capable of taking care of itself.

So Messi and company will weather the absence, hopefully brief and temporary, of Tito Vilanova while he undergoes chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Even if the coach's recovery from the recurrence of a tumor on a saliva gland takes longer than expected, his team is plenty strong enough to keep winning without him, to wrest back the Spanish league title from Real Madrid and to muscle past AC Milan in March to advance deep into the final rounds of the Champions League and even win that, too.

For such an astoundingly talented and well-blended team to underperform in either of those competitions in 2013 would be shocking, regardless of who is coaching it. The acid disappointment of losing La Liga to Madrid and falling to Chelsea in the Champions League semifinal in 2012 should be motivation enough for the players, without needing Vilanova to remind them they should do better next year.

Barcelona is less coach-centric than other teams, because its football methods, tactics, philosophy and identity are woven into its fabric, not dependent on any single personality. At Manchester United, Real Madrid or Arsenal, the imprint of managers Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger is evident on their teams. If those strong leaders took protracted time off, there would be probing questions about how their players might cope without them. But only a lengthy injury for Messi, its record-setting goal scorer, would spark grave doubts about Barcelona's chances of success in the months ahead. At Barca, the players are for the most part brighter stars than Vilanova, their coach. But at Real Madrid, Man United and Arsenal, it's mostly the other way round.

The center of Barcelona's universe isn't a person but a training academy, La Masia. That is where Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol and other vertebrae in the backbone of Barcelona's first team were drenched in the club's traditions. Once housed in an 18th-century Catalan farmhouse, the academy is now in a modern five-story building located at Barca's training grounds on the outskirts of the city. Vilanova is a La Masia alumni. So is the man he replaced as coach at the end of last season, Pep Guardiola. So is Vilanova's assistant coach, Jordi Roura.

Roura will warm Vilanova's seat and direct the team while he is on sick leave but won't formally replace him as coach - a nice touch that makes Barcelona look like a club with class, which sticks by its own through thick and thin.

Barcelona said that after surgery Thursday on his parotid gland and a few days in hospital, Vilanova might be able to coach during his expected six weeks of chemo and radiation treatment. Until he's back, Barcelona sports director Andoni Zubizarreta said the team was in "great hands" with Roura. A former Barcelona player under coach Johan Cruyff, Roura worked on Guardiola's staff, studying rival teams, before becoming Vilanova's assistant coach.

La Masia's production line of success and talent gives Barcelona continuity in difficult times like these. While other clubs head-hunt managers, chopping and changing in search of success, Barcelona's deep wells of experience have enabled it to recruit in-house for leadership since Guardiola replaced Dutchman Frank Rijkaard as coach in 2008.

Even though Vilanova is undefeated in the Spanish league this season and has led the team to the best league start ever by any team in Spain, his sudden absence mid-season shouldn't provoke a slump in results and might barely be noticed on the field. Team tactics and lineups didn't change massively when Guardiola handed over the reins to Vilanova, nor will they while Roura is caretaking. Barcelona calls itself "more than a club." It is also more than any one coach.

"Few things have changed," midfielder Xavi said Dec. 13, talking about the handover from Guardiola to Vilanova. "Everything has stayed the same."

It was Guardiola who once described Barcelona's football so succinctly: "Take the ball, pass the ball, take the ball, pass the ball." It is, of course, more complex than that. But Messi and his teammates have for years now been honing Barcelona's passing game into an art. They could probably find each other with their eyes shut and definitely with Roura on the coach's bench.

Barcelona has a nine-point league lead over Atletico Madrid and a 13-point jump on Real Madrid after just 16 games - a gap so whopping that Atletico coach Diego Simeone said Spain's top league has become "boring." Although this won't be how he or the players think, Roura can afford to lose a few games before he will come under sustained pressure for wins. His first match is at Valladolid in the league on Saturday, Barcelona's last game of 2012.

Barcelona's announcement this week that Messi, Xavi and Puyol all agreed to renew their contracts also gives the team long-term stability and removes an issue that potentially could have distracted the players and Roura.

Since last month, Barcelona has again been able to field Puyol and Pique in defense together after both recovered from injuries. David Villa also looks like the dangerous forward he used to be before eight months out with a broken leg. And Messi, well, how can more praise be heaped on a player who has scored a record 90 goals in 2012?

So no excuses.

Barcelona should keep winning while Vilanova gets better.

He surely wouldn't settle for anything less.

What Does The Initial Franchise Fee Cover? ? Business ? Franchising

betterluck.jpg

Starting a new small business franchise can be one of the most exciting and profitable moves for any budding entrepreneur, but before you make the big leap into a new business, its important to know as much as possible about the fundamentals of franchising. If youve spent any time looking into the benefits of a franchise, youve undoubtedly seen the statistics which show that franchises are nearly twenty times more likely to survive past the 5 year mark when compared to a small business startup. Additionally, franchises have been one of the only types of businesses to show growth in the midst of our current recession.

So what do you need to know before starting a small business franchise? While the most important part of selecting a franchise is choosing the business that excites you and will work best for your circumstances, another important aspect of a franchise is the initial franchise fee. Every franchise requires an initial franchise fee, but its important to know what this fee includes and how much it will cost, which varies greatly from franchise to franchise. Heres a look at some of the key components included in the average franchise fee.

Whats In A Name? When youre starting a small business, one of the most difficult aspects can be building a client base and gaining the trust of the people in your area. One of the quickest and easiest ways to accomplish this is to open up a franchise with a well established name. This is quite possibly the most important item included in the franchise fee and will usually make the difference between a $10,000 franchise and a $1,000,000 franchise. While a big name can help generate quick and sustainable profits, lesser known franchise names also have some advantages. If youre planning on starting a junk removal small business and decide to go with a 1-800-GOT-JUNK small business, youll benefit from a name thats also the companys phone number, which will go a long way in helping your clients remember your name and your phone number.

Wont You Please, Please Help MeWhen you start a small business, often the goal is to gain financial independence and to ?be your own boss?, but going it alone can a quite a daunting task, particularly if youve never owned or operated your own small business before. This is one area where franchises really do offer the best of both worlds. Included in your franchise fee with nearly every franchise is the support you will undoubtedly need to run a successful business. From the initial training, ranging from as little as a couple days, to several weeks in some cases, to the ongoing support and training tools offered by each franchisor, with a small business franchise youll definitely feel supported and youll always have all of your questions answered.

The Inside InformationOne of the toughest parts of starting a typical small business is learning all of the intricate details associated with that particular business. Many successful entrepreneurs have had experience in the business that they choose to pursue, so this makes it a bit easier on them. But what happens if youre starting a business in a field that you have absolutely no prior experience in? This is where a franchise can really come in handy. Not only does your franchise fee include the equivalent of a copy of the franchisors proprietary operations manual, but youll also gain access to the franchisors suppliers and list of clients and business partners. These types of lists can take the average small business startup years, if not decades, to compile, and having inside access to the franchisors suppliers will also often equate to lower costs for products that any small business can manage to achieve.

While some franchise fees may not include some of the items listed above, and some may include quite a bit more, the point of it all is that its important and beneficial for anyone considering a franchise to thoroughly investigate the franchise in questions prior to making the commitment. Most franchises make great businesses and provide plenty of income potential, but finding the right one for you and your needs is the name of the game when it comes to selecting a franchise. When you get closer to making your decision, make sure you take the time to ask the franchisor what all is included in their franchise fee, and whether it ends up being more money than its worth, or a screaming bargain, youll have the information you need to make the right decision.

The Next iPad Mini With A Better Screen Might Launch Sooner Than You Think (AAPL)

Steve Kovach, Business Insider

Apple is reportedly moving up production of its sequel to the iPad Mini, according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Doug Freedman.

In a research note, Freedman says Apple is gathering parts from companies like Texas Instruments for the new iPad Mini. Freedman is visiting China, and his report is based on talks he had with sources in Apple's supply chain.

He's not the only analyst who thinks a new iPad Mini will launch soon. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster says Apple will release an iPad Mini with a high-resolution Retina display in the first half of 2013.

And DigiTimes, which despite what some tech pundits say has a pretty good record with this kind of stuff, says the Retina display iPad Mini is coming soon.

Even though Apple typically sticks to annual releases for its big-name products, the consensus now seems to be that the company will push up its schedule to remain competitive. For example, Apple released its fourth-generation big iPad just seven months after the third-generation model launched.

Please Play with Your Math: New Museum Opens in New York City

Math can be a beautiful, immersive, full-body experience, according to the creators of the newly opened Museum of Math, or MoMath, in New York City. A sculpture that lights up and plays music, a touch-screen floor that turns into a maze and a square-wheeled tricycle that one can ride around a bumpy track are just a few of the more than 30 exhibits in the 19,000-square-foot space. The doors opened on December 15.

?We want people to play, to touch, try out the games and puzzles,? said Glen Whitney, a former mathematics teacher and the museum?s founder and executive director, during a preview of the museum last week. The goal is to give math a makeover?it should be fun and engaging, not tedious and difficult to understand, he explains. The museum will ?enable more people who want to connect with mathematics to do so.?

MoMath offers grade-specific private programs for students, which include classroom activities for students for pre- and post-visit instruction. Tours for other groups, such as math clubs, and weekend programs for the general public can also engage future visitors, says Cindy Lawrence, the museum?s associate director and chief of operations. ?We think math is like writing,? she says. ?You can always understand it at your own level and sophistication.?

That idea of math on your own level is apparent in the museum?s interactive display kiosks, which replace more traditional written labels. Visitors can select the basic or complex explanation for the exhibit. Those interested in even more detail can choose to learn about the history of related math discoveries, including the mathematicians involved, and explore galleries of images.

The museum mostly engages visitors with hands-on and interactive exhibits that display few visible numbers or equations. For example, when the smooth, interconnected globes of the ?Harmony of the Spheres? sculpture are touched, they play musical tones and light up. The exhibit connects?music and math through the exploration of groupings of three notes, called triads. Visitors can create harmonies, major chords and minor chords by touching different parts of the sculpture in specific ways and sequences. So, touching sphere A plays a chord, but touching the spheres adjacent to A and then touching A again changes the chord?one of the three notes will up or down by a half step (from C to C-sharp, for example). How the chord changes depends on the distance between a sphere and the previously played sphere. The sculpture as a whole serves as a geometric model of how triads relate to each other.

?

Twist 'n' Roll table at MoMath

Other exhibits let guests experiment and search for patterns. The ?Twist ?n? Roll? table holds colored rubber shapes that can be split apart and reconnected. Visitors then roll their new creations across the table. They can attempt to predict what path an object will take by looking at examples drawn on the surface. Will it wobble, curl, flip-flop or roll straight?

?

The ?Human Tree? is another immersive math experience. A camera captures a visitor?s image and projects it on a wall. In the projected image, arms morph into smaller versions of the person, which in turn branch and branch again into a tree made of body copies. The image is fun and a little silly but also an example of a fractal?detailed pattern shows self-similar shapes at different scales. The tree shape reminds visitors that mathematics can describe natural patterns. Becoming a fractal is exactly the kind of unusual experience that Tim Nissen, the museum?s chief of design, hopes visitors will carry with them.

?

Nissen, a self-proclaimed science groupie, brings his experience in architecture to exhibit design. He joined the MoMath team during its previous incarnation as a traveling mathematics show. Stars from that show, such as the square-wheeled trike, became part of the new museum. The awkward-looking vehicle gives cyclists a smooth ride over the petal-shaped bumps of a giant sunflower in the center of the exhibition. Nissen points out that the path the square wheels take over the curves traces a so-called catenary curve. This shape is an ?ideal? curve formed by a uniform cord hanging from two points, such as a chain hanging under its own weight. Regardless of how far apart the anchor points are, the force of gravity is equal at each point along the hanging chain. Inverted, catenary curves are used as load-bearing arches because they distribute weight evenly.

The catenary curves are not the only mathematical shapes hiding in plain sight at MoMath. In the striking ?Hyper Hyperboloid? exhibit, colored cords extending from ground to ceiling surround a chair. Nissen demonstrates how visitors can enter the shape, spin in the chair and watch the cords swivel and form a curved surface around them.

Tim Nissen in the Hyper Hyperboloid at MoMath

Visitors can further shape their own experience by creating their own sculptures. At the ?Mathenaeum? they enter a heptagonal (seven-sided) pavilion and choose one of three stations. A large crystal trackball along with wooden and brass levers help participants build and sculpt polygons on a large screen. Favorite creations can be submitted to the museum for a chance to be made real via a 3-D printer.

?

The many engaging exhibits arose from ideas solicited from mathematicians, computer scientists and others, Whitney says. ?We talked to many [mathematicians] who sense they are working in a poorly understood endeavor,? he remarks. They had lists of ideas they had always wanted to share with others. Helping to design the museum?s offerings ?was an outlet for their passion,? he says. Now the public can see the results.

Jessica Simpson shows off big weight loss

By Us Weekly

She's got one of Hollywood's most talked-about bodies, and Jessica Simpson proudly showed it off while shooting a Weight Watchers ad in the California desert a couple months back. After giving birth to her first child, daughter Maxwell Drew Johnson back in May, the designer, singer and "Fashion Star" mentor, 32, successfully dropped 50 pounds on Weight Watchers.

PHOTOS: Jessica's body evolution

In an outtake from the "Expect Amazing" campaign (which begins airing Dec. 25), the famous blonde looks radiant and slim in tight jeans, boots, low-cut blank tank top and plaid shirt. "Weight Watchers changed my relationship with food, and I feel so much more prepared to make the right choices," says the spokeswoman. "It feels pretty incredible.?

PHOTOS: Jessica's first pregnancy with Maxwell

Of course, the star (who dropped the weight by sticking to her Weight Watchers points and four trainer sessions a week) is set to undergo another transformation: As reported exclusively by Us Weekly, Simpson is now pregnant with her second child.

"Jessica loves being a mom," an insider told Us. "She really is overjoyed."

SEAL killed in Afghan rescue identified

The Pentagon has identified Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas Checque as the Navy SEAL who died of injuries sustained in the successful rescue of an American doctor from the Taliban over the weekend.

Checque, who hailed from Monroeville, Pa., died of "combat related injuries," according to a Pentagon release. Though the release only said Checque was assigned to "an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit," ABC News previously reported the fallen servicemember was a part of the Navy's elite SEAL Team 6, the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden.

Checque, 28, sustained his mortal injuries while on a nighttime mission Saturday to free Dr. Dilip Joseph, an American doctor who worked for an non-governmental organization based in Kabul. Joseph was kidnapped by the Taliban earlier this month and American officials believed he was in imminent danger.

Before Checque was identified publicly, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Sunday he was "deeply saddened" to learn one of the servicemen had been died.

"The special operators who conducted this raid knew they were putting their lives on the line to free a fellow American from the enemy's grip. They put the safety of another American ahead of their own, as so many of our brave warriors do every day and every night. In this fallen hero, and all of our special operators, Americans see the highest ideals of citizenship, sacrifice and service upheld. The torch of freedom burns brighter because of them," Panetta said.

President Obama also praised the Special Operations force for their bravery.

"Yesterday, our special operators in Afghanistan rescued an American citizen in a mission that was characteristic of the extraordinary courage, skill and patriotism that our troops show every day," he said Sunday.

oratorio palladium: Definition Personal Health and Fitness ? Fish-Oil ...

A diet rich in fish oils has been found to have a positive effect on bedsores, researchers from Tel Aviv University reported in the?British Journal of Nutrition?and the?American Journal of Critical Care.

The authors explained that?fish oils, which are full of antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids, can help reduce blood pressure, improve immune system function, lower joint and skin?inflammation, as well aspromote good fetal development. In this study, the researchers had set out to determine what benefits, if any, fish oils might have for?pressure ulcers?(bedsores).

After sitting or lying down for long periods, critically ill patients are at risk of developing bedsores on the skin and underlying tissue.

Professor Pierre Singer of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine and Mirian Theilla at the Rabin Medical Center, designed a randomized trial to find out what the impact of dietary fish oil supplements might be on critically ill patients? bedsores.

The patients had eight grams of fish oil added to their daily diet. Within three weeks, Prof. Singer and team found that:

  • Patients? symptoms of pain and discomfort from bedsores improved by 20% to 25%
  • There was significantly less inflammation throughout the patients? bodies
  • Their immune systems improved

Improving the immune system

Bedsores form because of a lack of oxygen, skin wetness and reduced bloodflow. The team had been inspired from a prior study which demonstrated that dietary fish oil supplements for bedridden patients increased levels of oxygen in body tissues. They wondered whether this increase in oxygen levels might help improve the symptoms of bedsores.

They recruited 40 critically ill patients to take part in the randomized study that they created themselves. Twenty of the participants received standard hospital food, while the other 20 ate the same, with eight grams of fish oil added each day.

As mentioned earlier,?significant improvements in bedsore symptoms were detected within three weeks in the fish oil group, compared to those on just the standard hospital diet.

They also found that the fish oil supplementation had boosted the patients? immune systems and helped reduce the swelling.

Professor Singer said:

?We saw a modification in the expression of a group of molecules associated with directing leukocytes, or white blood cells, in the direction of the wound, which could explain the improved healing.?

Blood levels of C-reactive protein were also significantly lower among those receiving the extra fish oils in their food. C-reactive protein is linked to inflammation and bacterial and viral infections, tissue injury, rheumatic diseases, and necrosis.

Fish oils for natural pain management?

The team wonder whether fish oils may be useful for natural pain therapy.

They plan to carry out a study which measures pain intensity among post-surgical patients after knee or hip replacements, and correlate those measurements with the amount of fish oil they received.

What are fish oils?

Fish oils come from?oily fish, also known as?fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, herring, tuna, mackerel and trout.

Nutritionists and scientists are interested in two particular substances found in fish oils:

  • DHA, which stands for docosahexaenoic acid
  • EPA, which stands for eicosapentaenoic acid

DHA and EPA are types of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Fillets of oily fish consist of up to 30% oil. Non-oily fish, also known as white fish, only have high fish-oil levels in the liver. Oily fish, apart from being good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, are also rich in?vitamins?A and D. White fish contain all these ingredients, but much less.

Although oily fish are thought of as better for the health than white fish (white fish is not bad for you), science has not yet proven this.

Most health authorities in North America and Western Europe encourage their people to regularly consume oily fish, or to take fish oil supplements, because of their health benefits.

Previous research on fish oils

    • Post-partum depression (post-natal depression)?- scientists from the University of Connecticut School of Nursing found that?DHA consumption during pregnancy probably helps reduce the risk of developing post-natal depression.
    • Multiple sclerosis?- several nutritionists, health care professionals and laypeople say that Omega-3 fatty acids are good for people with?multiple sclerosis. However, Norwegian scientists carried out a study and?found no link between Omega-3 fatty acid consumption and improved multiple sclerosis symptoms.
    • Eyesight?-?people who consume plenty of DHA are less likely to develop age-related vision loss, Canadian researchers found.
    • Prostate cancer?- there have been mixed findings regarding fish oils and?prostate cancer. One study found that?fish oils lower a man?s risk of developing prostate cancer, while another?found an association between Omega-3 levels and a higher risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer.
    • Mental health?-?fish oils were found to help people with ADHD, and other behavioral problems.
    • Memory?- an article in?PLOS One?reported that?working memory among young healthy adults improves if they raise their Omega-3 fatty acid consumption.

Self-Improvement, Self-Acceptance, and Being Who You Are ...

It was 6:58 PM on Tuesday October, 26, 2010 when I realized I just wanted to be myself. At that moment, I realized that I just couldn?t be anyone else.

LeighAndria Young, student and poet
School for the Creative and Performing Arts
Cincinnati, Ohio

These are the refreshing words of high school student, LeighAndria Young, that describe her shift toward a deeper self-acceptance of who she is. She embraces all her inner qualities ? her strengths and foibles ? realizing that it is her uniqueness and her capacity to ?just be? that is most crucial in life.

Watch a 3-minute video of LeighAndria performing her poem, ?6:58,? at this link here.

How does one shift toward greater self-acceptance, toward personal growth, or discover a clearer sense of identity? It starts with knowing thyself.

But, who are you at your core? What might you express in order to improve yourself? To help the lives of others? To make a contribution to society?

An answer to each of these questions is deceptively simple: Your character strengths.

All humans have strengths of character. The expression of our strengths is part of our uniqueness. They can help us overcome problems and reach our goals. They can help us relate better to the most important people in our lives and create new friendships and relationships. In the end, when we are consistently expressing our character strengths for the greater good, we are making a solid and meaningful contribution to society.

LeighAndria does this by expressing honesty as displayed in her transparency of self-expression. We are given a glimpse to who she is as a human being; her honesty paves a pathway for us to see this. She also expresses significant bravery by not only having the courage to be who she is but to also share her revelations with large groups. There are many other character strengths she exudes in her poetry presentation; go to this link and see how many strengths you can spot.

In addition, LeighAndria displays perspective (also called wisdom). This is clear when she exclaims: ?I have a voice that needs to be heard!,? echoing the eureka moment of the king played by Colin Firth in The King?s Speech (although LeighAndria?s epiphany came about two months before the film?s release). This exemplifies that she is seeing a wider perspective in her view of herself, others, and the world.

Through her inspiring example, we are called to pay closer attention to our own character strengths and how we might come to appreciate ourselves in a new way. This requires deliberate attention to ourselves but with a softness or gentleness where we can be open, curious, and accepting of what we discover. In this way, LeighAndria is an emissary of mindfulness for all of us.
