Obama proposes $6B in aid for vets (Politico)

President Barack Obama on Friday will ramp up his efforts to help unemployed veterans find jobs by calling for $6 billion in spending aimed at service members returning home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, administration officials said.

At the Arlington, Va., firehouse that sent the first emergency responders to the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, Obama will propose an initiative that the administration says could put 20,000 veterans in jobs that preserve national parks and other public land. He also will call on Congress to increase funding in fiscal 2013 for programs that help communities hire police and firefighters.

?Our freedom endures because of the men and women in uniform who defend it. As they come home, we must serve them as well as they?ve served us,? Obama said in his State of the Union address last week, echoing a theme that he stressed last fall as he urged Congress to pass pieces of his American Jobs Act aimed at helping veterans find jobs. ?That includes giving them the care and the benefits they have earned. ? And it means enlisting our veterans in the work of rebuilding our nation.?

Among the few pieces of Obama?s jobs bill that Congress passed are measures introducing tax credits for employers that hire veterans ? up to $5,600 for hiring unemployed veterans and as much as $9,600 for hiring long-term unemployed veterans with disabilities related to their service.

On Friday, Obama will propose the creation of a Veterans Jobs Corps conservation program that would use $1 billion over five years to help as many as 20,000 veterans find work preserving and restoring federal, state, local and tribal lands.

He also will include $4 billion in his fiscal 2013 budget to expand the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grant program and $1 billion more for a fire and emergency response program. Obama first proposed additional funding for these initiatives in his jobs bill.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who represented Colorado in the Senate until he was appointed to his current post, said Thursday that he sees the measures as likely to win support from his former colleagues on Capitol Hill.

?I think that there is great bipartisan support for our veterans,? he told reporters on a conference call previewing the president?s announcement. ?We expect the Congress to act. ? These are common-sense initiatives that take care of our 9/11 veterans who have served our country and are coming home.?

Not all of what Obama will announce requires congressional approval. He will instruct the COPS and emergency response grant programs to give preference to communities that plan to hire post-9/11 veterans. Funding available for the police program totals $166 million for the rest of fiscal 2012, while the emergency response program has $320 million in grants to award.

Obama is also announcing the expansion of entrepreneurship training initiatives that help retiring members of the military find civilian jobs.

Australian Football League Regular Season Betting

As one of the most competitive sports in the industry, the Australian Football League is getting set to kick off its 2010 regular season. Sixteen teams will compete for the premiership, with the regular season commencing in September. There are several betting options available to gamers based on statistical odds and favorites. With all of the thrilling match-ups expected to take place, there is no telling who will come out victorious.

As of right now, it appears that the Geelong Cats are the favorites to take home the crown. Certain web sites are offering decent payouts for their victory. For instance, betbrain is paying out EUR 4.15 for every EUR1 wagered. While this payout does seem enticing, the other figures clearly indicate that experts would not be shocked to see Geelong win it all during the regular season.

The same web site mentioned above is paying out EUR 81 for every EUR 1 if the Essendon Bombers come out victorious, which goes to show that the experts believe that it would be nearly impossible for this team to win the premiership.

What's amazing about betting on the Australian Football League regular season is that there are a variety of betting options available. As can be seen above, gamers can bet on a specific winner. However, those who are a bit more risk averse may choose a different betting option. Several brokers offer the opportunity to bet on who will place in the top eight, or top 50%, of the league. Similar to betting on a winner, odds are provided for each team to place in the top eight. As one would guess, the payouts are much lower since the chance of placing in the top eight is much more likely than winning the whole premiership.

Those looking to make the most out of their betting experience should be aware of all of their options. In the examples mentioned above, a future betting is being applied, since the payout is based on the result of the whole season. Gamblers looking for a more dynamic offering should consider proposition betting, which allows for one to place a wager on a specific statistic. For instance, one can bet that the Western Bulldogs will score at least a certain number of points in a game. By considering all of the betting options, one can make an informed prediction regarding the outcome of the Australian Football League premiership.

Another popular way to bet on Australian Football games is to choose the winner based on a statistical point margin. As always odds are given, though in this case they generally reflect the expected winner as well as the point spread. If the anticipated spread is 10 points and a team only wins by 7 points a bet for the losing team would actually be considered a win.

Obviously these are not the only ways to bet on football games. There are some more games available through numerous bookies. In general the games are going to be very similar to these however. Make sure to do your research before choosing a specific game or bookmaker.

Gossip Girl?s Identity Finally Revealed!

Okay? Gossip Girl is who!!!? Say what? For those of you that live under a rock, the voice of Gossip Girl has been revealed? as Georgina Sparks. Just as puzzled as I am? Okay, so this episode mainly revolved around Blair marrying Prince Louis (ick.) Georgina secretly taped Blairs confession of love for Chuck Bass and played it for everyone to hear. Then, with the wedding resuming, lovely Prince Louis (again, ick) makes it clear to Blair that their marriage will be loveless and only and obligation. They will only speak and interact with each other if need be. Then, Blair is whisked away by the third prince charming in the mix, Dan, who may or may not love Blair himself. We also found out that Serena is in love with Dan. At the end scene we see Georgina typing “XOXO – Gossip Girl” on her commuter. Getting whiplash? Yeah, me too. These characters go back and forth so much I have no clue where to turn half the time. She loves him, loves him not. They had sex, no they didn’t have sex. Is he cheating on her?! Seriously. Set things straight for once, please. Georgina being GG is [...]

Democrats slam Romney in preview of possible November race (Daily Caller)

Democrats dumped on Gov. Mitt Romney Tuesday night, saying he won the Florida GOP primary?only because of expensive negative ads, that the GOP turnout was low, and that Romney is both ?extreme? and ?out of touch.?

?Tonight Romney was successful in buying his way to victory. He & his super PAC outspent his nearest opponent by running 13,000 negative ads,? claimed a late-night tweet from Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

The same message was pushed by Bill Burton, a former press aide for President Barack Obama who is now running his own SuperPAC, Priorities USA Action. ?Team Romney spent 1.5 [times] as much as the entire GOP field spent in [Florida] in 08 on TV,? Burton tweeted.

Since Obama?s team is running a character-focused campaign, they are eager to paint Romney as an elitist who doesn?t understand ordinary Americans? lives.

?The more voters learn about Romney?s extreme, out-of-touch positions, the less they like him or trust him to lead,? Wasserman Schultz claimed.

Democrats are also trying to paint Romney as ruthless and untrustworthy.

?With every passing GOP contest, Romney becomes weaker with key general election swing and independent voters?should he make it that far,? Wasserman Schultz claimed in another tweet. ?That?s because Romney will say anything, take any position, and will distort any fact about his or his opponents? record to win.?

In contrast, Democrats are working hard to paint Obama as a leader who cares about, and is working hard on behalf of, middle-class Americans.

That character-focused strategy actually uses the stalled economy, high unemployment numbers and America?s fast-growing debt as a reason to vote for Obama.

Their hope is that depressed voters will vote for an empathetic and caring Obama, rather than for a supposedly elitist, uncaring and untrustworthy GOP challenger.

Democrats have dropped their early depiction of Romney as a flip-flopper, perhaps because that claim undermined their current efforts to paint him as extreme and ruthless.

Ben LaBolt, press secretary for Obama?s 2012 campaign, highlighted the relatively low voter turnout in the Florida GOP race. (RELATED: Full coverage of the Florida primary)

In 2008, the Florida turnout was a record for the GOP, hitting 1,949,498. Last night?s turnout was a comparatively modest 1,72 million.

?More signs that GOP enthusiasm gap was nothing more than overly enthused GOP pundits,? LaBolt claimed?in a tweet.

Paul Begala, a long-time Democratic strategist, continued to tweet taunts at Romney?s team.

Last night, he slammed the former Massachusetts governor for criticizing Obama?s Ivy League elite advisors, even though Romney himself holds two?Harvard University?degrees.

?Mr. 2-Degrees-From-Harvard, Mitt Romney, attacks intellectuals in his FL speech, blasting O?s ?friends in the faculty lounge,?? Begala tweeted.

When the voting result was clear, Begala also gloated about the defeat suffered by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, whose 1994 takeover of the House derailed the ambitions of Begala?s former client, President Bill Clinton.

?Newt vows to fight all the way to convention in August. Crowd cheers a little. I cheer a lot,? he tweeted.

Begala?s desire for a long and bitter primary battle also colored his compliment for the third-place finisher, Sen. Rick Santorum. ?There is a homemade quality to Santorum?s campaign that is a stark contrast to the 100% Rayon phoniness of Romney,? Begala quipped.

Apple hires Dixons chief to drive global retail (Reuters)

LONDON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Apple Inc has hired Dixons Chief Executive John Browett, who revived the British electronics retailer by emphasizing customer service, to lead the iPad maker's global retail expansion.

Apple chief Tim Cook, making his first high-profile hire since taking the helm of the world's largest technology company, lured the well-regarded industry executive to fill a critical post once held by Ron Johnson, another outsider who left Target Corp to join Apple in 2000.

Johnson resigned from Apple last November to join retailer J.C. Penney Co Inc as chief executive.

Browett, Dixons' CEO since 2007, was previously chief executive of Tesco Plc's successful online shopping site. He will oversee Apple's retail strategy and the expansion of its stores around the world, from the current total of around 300.

The executive, credited with freshening Dixons' image with innovative marketing -- including an advertising campaign featuring Darth Vader -- joins Apple as the Silicon Valley giant eyes markets abroad to sustain its growth.

"An outsider with international experience will help guide Apple's global expansion strategy," said RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky. "His experience includes localizing stores for multiple countries."

On Johnson's watch, Apple opened its first retail outlet -- in McLean, Virginia -- in May 2001. It now has a chain of more than 300 stores, which generated an average of $34.1 million each in fiscal 2010 and accounted for 15 percent of the company's net sales.

"(Browett)'s got big shoes to fill," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis. "Ron Johnson drove the Apple store as a customer experience with a positive halo effect for the business."

Wall Street views Apple's stores as an important advantage in competing with rivals Google Inc and Amazon.com Inc as well as other traditional PC makers.

"Our retail stores are all about customer service, and John shares that commitment like no one else we've met," said Cook.

INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION

Apple's retail success is likely to keep growing over the next few quarters as huge numbers of consumers continue to snap up the company's popular iPhones and iPads. Apple sold 37 million iPhones and more than 15 million iPads during the last quarter, and its cash balance swelled to nearly $100 billion by the end of 2011.

Last week, Apple posted quarterly results ahead of market expectations.

Browett's appointment has sparked speculation in some quarters that Apple may be planning a push in its retail operations in Europe, where his expertise is greatest.

But Gillis said that while Browett's international experience is helpful, he did not appear to have the relevant expertise in Apple's key growth markets in Asia.

In October, Best Buy abandoned plans for a chain of European megastores, while Kesa Electricals, Europe's No. 3 player, effectively paid a bidder to take the British money-losing Comet chain off its hands.

Both companies, as well as Home Retail's Argos business, have struggled to compete with Dixons in the UK as Browett revamped stores, focused on more popular megastores and improved product ranges with a mantra of improving the shopping trip for customers.

Shares of Dixons Retail, Europe's second-largest electronics retailer and owner of the Currys and PC World chains in Britain, fell on Tuesday following the news that Browett would leave in April to join the world's leading smartphone maker as senior vice president of retail, based in California.

Dixons, which also runs Elkjop in Nordic countries, UniEuro in Italy and Kotsovolos in Greece, said Sebastian James would succeed Browett.

James, who was instrumental in executing much of Dixons' turnaround plan, is the company's operations director and a former strategy director at mother and baby products retailer Mothercare.

"We understand that the (Dixons) board had already carried out external bench-marking as part of its succession plans, and had decided that internal candidates would provide the best solution," said Investec analyst David Jeary.

Dixons shares, which rose more than 50 percent in the last month after the well-received Christmas trading update, were down 8.7 percent at 13.95 pence. Apple was up 0.25 percent at $454.12 in afternoon Nasdaq trading in New York.
